Military file - Padova

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Military file - Padova

Post by deigo1 »

Through some other assistance on the site I was able to request the military list of my great-grandfather. The archives from Padova were able to send the specific file here recently. I didn't see any call to military service, but there was addendum added in 1905, Francesco was born in 1885. That I'm interpreting to say that he wasn't called to the military, because they took his brother Guiseppe (born 1880).

From military standpoint, would that have been common at this time if one brother was active in the military, they wouldn't call another to duty?

Thank you,
D.

Yes, it is said that the soldier was put in 3rd category, that is not called to service or called later only if necessary, this was made for many reasons, such as medical or familiar situations, as that in this case.
I didn't find the Law existing at that time, but in general was so even later.

This document was prepared when the person was 19 yo and completed with the personal and medical data taken at the 'visita di leva' and its exit.
The soldiers in the 1st category were called immediately to service (in the number required), those in 2nd category were in excess, but called later when necessary ; 3rd category as said.
Others could be sent to a new exam the following year or dispensed from service for medical reasons.
