FYI - Ancestry.com Colorization of Black and White Photos

Post by rp76226 »

I really like this new feature on Ancestry.com that enables you to convert black and white photos to color photos. I think many of you will too. You get to keep both the Black and White original photo and the colorized photo, plus determine which one shows first in the Gallery section of any person on the family tree.

While not perfect, most photos show great improvement, especially the faces. Most of the time, so do the clothes and other items in the photos, but not always. If you don't like it, you can either cancel the Colorized photo or keep it but opt to display the original black and white photo.

Since some of you have family trees on Ancestry.com, here's how it works:

1. Click on any Black and White photo in the Gallery section for any person on the Tree.
Note - to see a person's Gallery section - go to a person's Profile page first (which is what you get when you click on a person or do a Person Search) which initially shows that person's "Facts", then select "Gallery" to the right of "Facts" near the top of the screen to view the photos for that person.

2. If that person has any Black and white photos, click on one that you want to colorize.
3. Next click the Edit symbol (a pencil).
4. Then click on the Colorize symbol above the word Colorize shown on the right side of the page.
5. Wait a few moments for the photo to be colorized.
6. If you like the result, then click on "Save".
7. The photo will be shown and kept in color, but it will have the words "Original" and "Edited" above the photo so that you can go back to the original Black and White photo anytime in the future. If you do go back to the original black and white photo in the future, you will still be given the option to again select the Colorized photo in the future too.
