scase-scassa? difficult task

Post by llanbiere »

Hello. I'm new to this site. I've hit a bit of a problem on my research. My grandfather was a mariner who came to Wales in the 1890's. I have his marriage certificate dated October 1898. His age was 28, and I know he was born in Italy. I understand he was born in or around Genova but had sailed to Wales from Naples. The difficulty is that like many Italian immigrants he anglicized his name. Hence he appears on the wedding certificate as Andrew Scase, and on the 1901 census as Andrew Scase, place of birth Italy (British subject). His father is shown on the wedding certificate as Domingos Scase, labourer. Family rumour has it that he might have had a brother who went to America, and that he also used to write to his family in Italy. The nearest Italian name I can find to Scase (which is an English name) is Scassa. Any suggestions as to where to go from here?

Grazie mille
