Diane..I'm sorry. Are you just asking for help with the surname in general or a specific person?

We most likely can help but you need to simply your post a bit. I'm old and have trouble reading between the lines these days!

So Dominic Luvate was born in Como abt 1800 and he travelled to England. Is this right? Do you have a name for his wife or the names of his children? This may help.

Hello Nuccia

Yes Dominic Luvate was born in como about 1800
His wife Jane Railton and thier children were all born in england.
They were married in 1823 so he came to england before that.
so all ive got is Dominic Luvate to go off.

Just want to clarify.......Do you have documention that states Dominic was born in the town of Como? Or are you referring to the province?

I believe LUVATE is misspelling for LOVATI (and probably you pronounce Luvate as we pronounce Lovati). The surname is common in west Lombardy which includes Como and province. In the beginning of XIX century Como was under French rule because of the Napoleonic wars, so there's a possibility of finding civil records. Otherwise you have to search for Church records which can be very difficult. The full name should be Domenico Lovati.
Good luck!

You may try sending a letter with a request for information about Domenico Lovati (and alternate sp.) born in Como in 1799 or 1800 to the town-hall, or the church (Como has a Bishop so best thing is to write to the diocese) or to the State Archive (which does not have birth records but a lot of other stuff including the draft records).
If you don't know Italian I know there are websites with model-letters that you can copy, someone will post it for sure.
The addresses are
town hall
Municipio di Como
ufficio dello stato civile
Via V. Emanuele II, 97
22100 Como

diocese
Diocesi di Como
piazza Grimoldi, 5
22100 Como
E-mail: curia@como.chiesacattolica.it

State archive
Archivio Di Stato
Via Briantea, 8
22100 Como

Good luck!

Hi Marco,

Please clarify for me.
Should it be Ufficio dello Stato Civile or Officio di Stato Civile?
I've seen it both ways.

Thanks,

.. hmmm ... well, certainly not Officio, (it's not wrong, it's old) but using dello or di is pretty much the same. By googling it, it looks like di is more common, but may be because it's shorter to write!
As for the real official name, I believe each town-council decides independently. Bureaucracy being what it is, in Milano the office is (just checked out)
Ufficio Affari Generali del Settore Anagrafe Stato Civile e Leva Elettorale (! :D )
You don't want to write that down on envelope, do you  ?
best,
Marco
