[align=left]Hi everyone! I’m very new at this family history search and I am really excited about finding this site. I have been watching the postings for the last 2 days and it is amazing how helpful you all are and how much info you are able to get for people. I hope you can help me in my endeavor. Here goes the info given to me by my late aunt.

My great grand father Luigi Ianelli lived with his parents outside of the village of Parma, Italy. They did not own the land, they were sharecroppers. He met his future wife Celestina Josephine Borrelli in the town of Parma. She worked at the local Inn or Tavern owned by her father Joseph Borrelli. She was his daughter by his first wife who died. He did remarry. Luigi & Celestina married & moved to Marseilles France, Their children were born in France and the one son, Antoine (Anthony) Ianelli was my grandfather. He was born on 22 March 1892. I have a copy of his birth certificate. He came to the US according to his application for naturalization (I have a copy of that) from the port of Havre France & arrived in Ellis Island on 14 March 1902 aboard the French line ship the Champaign. (his spelling. May not be accurate). At this point he shows his name as Anthony not Antoine. I searched Ellis Island & could not find him. His Immigrant ID card no was 12037 on his Naturalazation app. He then came to Philadelphia, Pa on 16 March 1902 & lived there until his death on 25 June 1955. I do not know when his parents came to the US, but I know they did, as I met my great grandfather as a young boy and have pictures of him at my grandfather’s house.

Now here is the info I would like to acquire.
When did Luigi & Celestina come to US? When were they married and what was their DOB? Can I get copies of the certificates? What were the names of Luigi’s parents & when & wherewere they born & married? What were the names of Joseph’s wives? What were the names of Antoine’s siblings & when were they born. What info can I find about the Inn the Borrelli's ran in Parma?

I know this is a tall order & don’t expect to get it all. If you could help me get some of it, or point me to where I could find it, I would be very grateful.
Thanks Louis

vj, you are amazing. Your info is terrific! You may be right about the misspelling of the last name as the other info looks pretty good. Is there a way I could find this info myself. It would be great to be able to know how & where to search for this stuff. Thanks you so much for your help.

Louis, the above info is on ancestry.com, a paid subscription site.
If you are near a Family History Center they should have free access (some libraries also). vj

VJ, I was wrong about Anthony's birth date it was 22 April 1892 not 22 March 1892. The WWII registration is positively him as the address & wife are a perfect match. The WWI could also be him but not sure. Will have to try to confirm address of something. I just found a 1910 census that has my great-grandfather (Luigi Ianelli) on it. He was living at 1523 Fitzwater st. in Phila. enumeration # 696 page 3B lines 22-26, series T624 roll 1400. The info for him is perfect, so I am pretty sure it is him. I don't think the Yenelli is my relative, although it looks really close. The age of Anthony is off by about 5 years & I don't ever remember hearing about him being a ship builder. The ships manifest is very interesting. Could be them. Was that also on Ancestry.com? Thanks much again for the help. You have given me a lot of stuff to work on. I will look into the Ancestry site. It may be worth it to join. Thanks again Louis

Hi Louis,
I fixed the links to the draft registration cards and census.
Did you notice the address on the WW1 Card is the same as
the 1920 census?
Ship Manifest is on Dr Steve Morse's 'One Step' Search Site
for Ellis Island (free).
Quite a few of us here have subscriptions to ancestry. It is
one of the best subscription sites.
Please let us know if you need anything you find linked, or
if you need anything else.
Just ask, we appreciate the opportunity to help you in your
search. :D

Valarie,
I am really frustrated! I went to Dr. Morse's site and tried to bring up the same manifest that you found so I could get a copy downloaded to my system. Even though I had all of your info and the picture of the manifest, I could not find it. What a disappointment that was. I tried every suggestion in his FAQ list and no go. What is your secret? Please!!

Hi Louis, because the surname is wrote as Jamelli
http://ellisisland.org/search/matchMore ... &dwpdone=1
In effects it seems that the right surname is Jannelli very frequent also in the past time, changed for most part, currently in Iannelli/Ianelli

Louis,
Isn't suanj fantastic at names & origins?!
I always thought that finding a 'j' at the beginning of an Italian
name was a transcribing error. I've only been volunteering here
for about a year. It never fails that I learn something new from
suanj!

Using Steve Morse's site takes a little practice. It's great when names
are transcribed exactly as we know them now, often this isn't the case.
For your manifest I think I found it using ancestry.com's database
first. After finding a possible Louis (Luigi) with the same birth year
as the 1920 census (abt 1857) I looked only for 'Luigi' born 1856-59
(no last name), immig 1900-1905 (1901 on census), on ancestry.com.
Since 'Jamelli' sounded similar to Ianelli I looked on Steve Morse
for the same manifest (using the same date & ship on ancestry).
Boy, I hope this makes sense.
Sometimes a record you can find and can confirm will lead to the next record.
Ellis records are tough to print. I copy and print them to a word pad in
sections then tape them together.
Hope this helps!
Valarie

Suanj,
Thanks for your input. I will remember the difference in the names in the future searches.
