Lucia Pace from Avigliano
Lucia Pace from Avigliano
Hello, I'm wondering if anybody could help me solve an old family legend.
I'm looking for any relatives of my great aunt named Lucia Pace. She was born in Avigliano in the province of Basilicata at around 1880 and left from Naples by herself for New York when she was only 20 years old. A few years later, she sent a letter saying that she was in San Francisco, and nobody heard from her since. Nobody knows where she went, but whenever I go back my father's hometown of Forenza, everybody always tells stories and shows pictures of brave Zia Lucia who ventured through the mountains on muleback and off to the New World all on her own.
If you know of her or have any information about her, about where she lived, when she died, or if she had any children, it would be incredibly helpful.
Thank You very much,
Claudia

Re: Lucia Pace from Avigliano
There's a Maria Lucia from Forenza... but born in 1888.. married, and would have travelled with daughter Cristina...
Unfortunately they did not sail on this voyage since there's a line running through the names... there could be another listing...
First Name: Ma. Lucia
Last Name: Pace
Ethnicity: Italy
Last Place of Residence: Forenza, Itlay
Date of Arrival: Dec 26, 1911
Age at Arrival: 23 Gender: F Marital Status: M
Ship of Travel: Duca di Genova
Port of Departure: Naples
Manifest Line Number: 0010

Page 2
Can you mention any siblings...? You've seen photo's of her? Do you know what her occupation was? Teacher??

Re: Lucia Pace from Avigliano
It will be very difficult to find her and know beyond a shadow of a doubt that it is her without more info.....something concrete to identify her.
This may or may not help....but the California death index usually list the mothers surname......Do you know Lucia's mothers surname??

Re: Lucia Pace from Avigliano
Firstly, I'd like to thank everyody very much for even this beginning of a help.
She had 2 brothers named Donato and Vito Pace, but they both stayed in Italy. I should know this since Vito is my grest grandfather.
I've spoken to my father and he's quite sure that the girl listed as from Forenza must be her, but the marriage and child is news to us. She was indeed born in Avigliano but the whole family moved from there to Forenza before she left. Essentially, any Pace from Forenza is a relative of mine, since no Pace at that time was originally from Forenza, but moved from Avigliano with that part of the family.
I'll have to ask my grandparents about her mother's last name, but that shouldn't e to difficult to find.
One promising thing is that if she had a child, then she might have married in Italy and so kept the name of Pace, instead of doing it in the US and taking her husband's name. Granted, she may have done any number of things to change it afterwards.
But if she did have a child, perhaps I can find a record of her birth.
Thanks again,
Claudia.

Re: Lucia Pace from Avigliano
I noticed the one traveling with the child when I posted the first one lists her father Giuseppe Nicola as the next of kin and going to Ohio, if I'm reading it correctly...sound familiar to you?
Re: Lucia Pace from Avigliano
Hi Claudia, really nice to hear a positive reply! But we do need to confirm Maria Lucia's father as Giuseppe Nicola....pacemeow wrote:I've spoken to my father and he's quite sure that the girl listed as from Forenza must be her, but the marriage and child is news to us. If you are certain that this is the person you are looking for... then there should be further records we can dig up since we now have a surname for Cristina...
This is how Cristina's name is transcribed...
0010. Pace, Ma. Lucia F 23 M Italy Forenza, Itlay
0011. Piezzo, Oristma F 2 S Italy Forenza, Italy
According to this ships record, the husband is Vittorio Pierro and not Piezzo as transcribed...
Hope this helps some.
Further edit... I thought the husband's name was Antonio... but it does look like Vittorio???? Please see census records posted by vj below....

Re: Lucia Pace from Avigliano
It does look like Born US eh?
So... if this is the case... maybe more manifests to locate???
I think it does say Box 115... there are other addys there with the same Box #
Since this is a "Did not Sail " manifest... some info is missing... like whether she was was in the USA at a previous time... and a better destination address...
Thank you for pointing that out vj !!

Speranza & all,
Isn't it wonderful when the names are transcribed
correctly!
Guessing there may be more than one missing manifest.
Vittorio 1st manifest abt 1900?
2nd manifest after Cristina was born (bet 1906-9)?
and the missing manifests for Lucia & Cristina?
It would be terrific if this were the correct family.

Speranza,
That was a great find!
Checked ancestry, the image for pg 1 isn't much better.
Can you make out town of birth on pg 2?
