Palmisano / Baccaro from Locorotondo

Post by Barb1958 »

Greetings,
Seeking information on Cataldo Palmisano, father of Martino (born 1883), of Locorotondo, Bari. I have no other information on Cataldo and only obtained his name from Martino's WWI draft registration and immigration record.
Also any information on Giorgio Baccaro, father of Vita Marie who married Martino in 1922). It appears that Martino returned from USA to Locorotondo to marry Vita Maria in 1922 bringing her back to New York same year.
I speak no Italian. I have no idea how to obtain any further information. Thank you.

There is microfilm available for the town of interest from which you can search all birth, death and marriage info.......there are examples which Nuccia can provide to help you with the documents you will be researching,
they follow a standard format.....

http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... +Locoroton &columns=*,0,0

to locate a library near you:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

guideline written by Trish on obtaining microfilm:
http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... =2581.html

Italian word list for common genealogy terms:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/ ... Italia.ASP

one for Latin:
http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/search/ ... LLatin.ASP

and common abbreviations:
http://lnx.bertotti.it/genealogia/modul ... =21&page=1

I will pm Nuccia for the example of documents.

Hi Barb1958 and wldspirit..

There are many documents available from the LDS films and there are also online translations of those documents.

A great site to for translations..

http://www.comunesofitaly.org/Links/RuthNerud.htm

You should first do all your American research..get whatever documents you can. Birth, marriage and death info...Sometimes they will provide enough info to you that you will know which films to order. Make sure you order the "Long Forms" not just an extraction. They provide more info.

In order to find info on Gaetano you would need to know when he was born and where he was born. You could get this info from Martino's Birth Act and Marriage Act. If you don't have that info then order the films with Martino's info first and then work backwards..You can use the same documents for Vita Marias family....Does this make sense?

Use some of these forms to help you chart what you know and already have documents for and work backwards..these are my two favourites..

http://www.ancestry.com/trees/charts/ancchart.aspx

Keeps track of the family and a pedigree chart..a must for charting ancestors backwards. Of course, if you have a genealogy software program you would be able to print it from that.

http://www.byubroadcasting.org/ancestor ... digree.pdf

An example of what a birth act could look like:

http://italiangenealogy.tardio.com/Foru ... =5693.html

What I didn't realize was the date the document was written is not necessarily the birth (or death) date but the date the event was registered. Its usually not the same.

As for speaking Italian..lots of great translators here so don't worry about that. I have copies of Marriage Acts, Banns and Death Acts too. If you need to see them just let me know and I can post them. Need to get the kids ready for school first..

Hi everyone,

Just wanted to say that the filing date & actual date of occurance shold be on the record. One is in the first part of the record & the other is further down. The second place may say "same (but in Italian)," :) but will also give the time (hour) of the event. :)

As for translating the records, the genealogical word lists that Lisa provided, should get you the most important information, but like Nuccia said, there are many translators here willing to help.

Hope this helps.

Hi Raffaella!

We totally missed the obvious here, didn't we? We should have found the manifest first and gotten familiar with the family and then posted the rest of this.

Thanks a lot for posting it. I was hoping you would stop by..are there any other things that you can contribute to the things we posted? You are more familiar with Italian records and laws then any of us could ever be so I know your contribution would be really valuable to us all. :D I hope my explanation of the above records are correct but if you need to change or add anything then please feel free.

Hugs
