What port did Northern Italians pull in to?
What port did Northern Italians pull in to?
When immigrants from Northern Italy came to America did they come to ellis island or did they go to some other port?
Re: What port did Northern Italians pull in to?
There's no one correct answer to your question. It would depend on where the person's ultimate destination was and whether the steamship company the emigrant contracted for his ticket had service to that port. I believe there was direct service from Palermo to New Orleans, and other ports serviced Boston, Philadelphia and Baltimore in addition to New York, but Palermo isn't exactly a convenient embarkation point for someone living in Florence for instance. If Philly, Boston, NO or Baltimore was an emigrant's final destination and there was no direct service from the nearest port, they likely went to Eliis Island and took a train. Besides the steamship companies, the railroads made significant profits on the emigrant traffic and formed a de facto cartel to carve up the revenues. But that's another story.

I have been doing searches of the manifests for my relatives who came to Ellis Island in the early 1900s. Very interesting and exciting to see the information come right before your eyes as it was written back then.
Best of luck in your searching!
