1930 Census help

Post by Poipuo4 »

I am trying to find out when my great grandfather died. His name was Filippo Petruzzelli. I have him in the 1920 census, living in Bronx, NY. His spouse is Filomena. The 1920 census in ancestry has his last named mis-spelled as Petruzzello. He was born approximately 1864 in Sarno, Italy and arrived in the US in 1911 (he traveled back and forth a few times). Can anyone find him in the 1930 census? He would still be living in NY - the Bronx, or Mount Vernon (if alive). He was alive at least until the Depression. I don't see him in the NY death index, but the family is certain that he died in the Bronx.

Not yet....There are so many ways one can mispell Petruzzelli. I don't know where to start! His name was mispelled in the 1920 census. I am certain that he was living in the Bronx or Mount Vernon, NY in 1930.

Yes, that is the 1920 one. I was also able to find his son, Michael, in the 1930 census (spouse Margaret), but I can't seem to find Philip/Filippo in the 1930 census.

Poiuo,

Philp is most likely retired by 1930. Have you found Tony, oldest son, in the '30 census. He may be living with him. Do you have the address of the house, or the neighborhood where Philp lived?
When did his wife die? Her death certificate could help.

Hi There,

I found this in the NY Death Index. Maybe the one of the two below is the wife of Filippo. If you find her death record, then call the cemetery to see if Filippo is buried with her.

Name - Age at Death - Death Date - Certificate # - County - Soundex

Petruzzelli, Filomena - 81 y - July 20, 1947 - 7311 - Bronx - P362
Petruzzelli, Filomena - 62 y - May 17, 1919 - 12613 - Kings - P362

Here is the link for the form to use to write for the record.

I hope this helps some

Thanks, Trish. The 81 year old is the right person. I sent away for the certificate. That is a good idea to call the cemetary.

Nello: I hope to get the address off of his wife's death certificate, but as of now, I know that he lived in the Bronx in 1930. You are also correct, I know that he did not work at the time.

Wldspirit:

Here are the married names of the Petruzzelli sisters.

Frances Fungillio,Margaret Iomio,Peggy (Michelina)Zanferdino.

I found Michael but am also certain that Phillip did not live with Michael. I looked up Tony/Antonio and did not find Phillip and Philomena.

Thanks for helping!

Ditto on still looking. Tried a first name only wild card search on ancestry using Phil* and Fil* for the Bronx and Westchester and didn't locate any possibles but I was getting crosseyed scrolling for so long. Also I struck out searching on the daughters' married names.

I looked at the daughters' names too and no luck. I suppose the census could have missed them. Thanks for trying!
