Start at the end and work backward....ellis island, www.paginebianche.it for surname directory in town and possible relatives. Documents can be obtained based upon full name and date or year of birth. Peter

If you are certain the Gianfranco is the first name then go to www.genealogylookups.com/narchives.htm and file form 81 with NARA (USA national archives) for his entry into the USA. This covers all porets in the USA. Peter

Do you know which comune within the Province of Campobasso Giancarlo Cianfagna was from? I have done a fair amount of research in the Comune of Campobasso itself and have not to my recollection come across the surname Cianfagna. However, the surname Gianfagna appears throughout the Stato Civile for that comune and the similarity of the two surnames struck me. Of course, there seems to be endless variations of Italian surnames and perhaps the Cianfagna family hails from a different comune in the province. If you like, I can look for the birth of a Giancarlo Gianfagna in Campobasso (CB) circa 1900, as I have that film on permanent loan at my FHC. By the way, my 5ggm was Arcangela Gianfagna, born circa 1750 in Campobasso (CB).

John: She doesn't know the comune of origin and thats why she is waiting for the form 81 return from NARA. Thanbks for the offering of help and we will get back to you when she gets the information if we need to since once we have the town then its a hop skip and jump for everything. Your very kind to offer. Peter

I checked the Registri dello Stato Civile for the Comune of Campobasso from 1897 through 1902 but did not find a birth record for a Giancarlo Gianfagna - or a Giancarlo Cianfagna for that matter. Looks like I was barking up the wrong tree. Good luck in your research.

How certain are you about the date of arrival being 1912? I found the following info on a Giovanni/John Cianfagna that is close.

Per SSDI, John Chiafagna born 24 Jun 1904, died Jul 1967, last residence Yonkers, Westchester, NY. Also an Esther Cianfagna born 21 Apr 1893, died January 1986, last residence Yonkers, Westchester, NY.

Per 1930 U.S. census for Yonkers, Westchester, New York
Cianfagne, John; age 27, born Italy, arrived U.S. 1920, naturalized citizen
---------, Esther; wife, age 32
---------, Susie; daughter, age 3
---------, Antoinette; daughter, age 1(?)

Per the Ellis Island website, Giovanni Cianfagna, age 17, and Antonio Cianfagna, age 43, arrived in New York aboard the S.S. Regina d'Italia on July 06, 1920. Giovanni and Antonio were born in the town of Civitacampomarano in the province of Campobasso. Giovanni's mother was Assunta Galluppi, so Giovanni probably named his eldest daughter for her since Susie is a common American nickname for Assunta.

Regards,
Regina
