Need help locating a ship manifest

Post by JIMMYSAL »

I am trying to locate a ship manifest for my maternal Great Grandfather and maternal Great Great Grandparents. I have been unsuccessful so far. I would appreciate if anyone could help me. I know very little about them, but I will tell what I know. My GG Grandparents names are Giuseppe and Francesca Croce. Their son's name is Premo Croce, which is my Great Grandfather. The only record I've found so far is the 1920 census, which has Giuseppe immigrating from Italy in 1910 and Francesca and Premo immigrating in 1913. I think Giuseppe went to Washington D.C. and Francesca and Premo met him there. They stayed there until the late teens and then they moved to Camden, New Jersey were they spent the rest of their lives. When they came to the states their surname was transcribed incorrectly somewhere along the line. Their official name is Croce, but they used the misspelled name "Croge" for the rest of their lives. I tried to attach the 1920 census record, but I was having problems. Could someone attach it for me? The name is spelled Premo Crage residence Camden, New Jersey. :D Thank You!!!! :D

Do you think they made a mistake on Francesca's surname? Could that be her maiden name? She claims to be joining her husband Giuseppe, which means they married in Italy before they came. It does'nt make sense why her surname is'nt Croce.

It was common for married women to use their maiden names particularly when travelling without their husbands.

Possible ship manifest for Giuseppe Croce

Moltke, out of Naples, arrived NY 4 Sep 1906
Giuseppe Croce, yob about 1882, male, single
Last residence, looks like Campli
Desitnation Philadelphia PA

Having trouble with imageshack this AM so I've linked the Ellis Island site record.

http://www.ellisisland.org/search/shipm ... 0142100051

The above might be your ggrandfather if he came to the states unmarried, returned to Italy, was married and then came back. If that's the case, we need to locate another manifest.

In relooking at Francesca and Premo's manifest, their last residence appears to be Campli, and the birth town at second look could be Teramo in the same province as Campli. Need a second or third set of eyes to make sure I'm not seeing things.

Italian women do not lose their surname as American women do.
It is still common practice in Italy for women to use their maiden name,
which is why you find them traveling under their maiden name on ship manifest......after arriving, they then adopted the American custom of taking their husbands surname.

Biff, I see Teramo also.

Checking current names in

Campli: no Croce
Teramo: 27 Croce

Campli: 3 Foco
Teramo: no Foco

(Foca - neither town)

Valerie,

It appears that the 1906 and 1910 ship manifests belong to the correct Giuseppe Croce with the strongest evidence being the 1910 manifest that shows he was previously in Philadelphia and his wife's name as Francesca Having a devil of a time making out his birth place on the 1910 manifest. Take a look at the map below and see if you find any candidates. I'll do the same.
