Boniello/D'Elia

Post by misbris »

While I'm waiting for news from Italy about the Briscione's. thought I'd work on my grandmother's family. I alway thought she left her family in Contursi. Recently found out that they came to the US twice and died here.

Carmine Boniello (1856) and Rosaria D'Elia (1855) left my grandmother Giusippina in Contursi with a wealthy childless aunt and came to the US in the 1890's. They returned to Italy abt 10 years later. I cannot find any record of the first trip.

I have manifests for Carmine and son, Salvatore for April 11, 1907 on the Lombardia. Rosaria, son (Giovanni) daughter (Concetta) and Concetta's child (Giovannina Zerbino) came back on the Hamburg, Mar. 28, 1910.

They went to Nichol St. Newark,NJ

I have not been able to find any census records for them. Any help would be greatly appreciated

Valarie,
Great find. Looks like you searched on Zerbino?
Same address as both manifests 98 Nicols Street. It appears that Giovanni was apprenticed to Concetta's husband Alfredo.

Thanks for linking the manifests. I didn't know how to do it. I know the directions are here, I just haven't mastered it yet.

Yes, that is the family. I didn't realize they all lived together. I wish I could find the earlier records. I have the feeling they may have been here and left, missing the 1890 and 1900 census years.

Maybe 1900, 1890 is mostly destroyed except
for the 'veterans' census.
Appears that son John was born in Italy 1895?

You guys are fantastic!!!

I knew that John was a musician by avocation, but didn't know Sal was a professional.

Wow, now I can narrow down dates. Sal is listed as native born in 1890. So they were here in 1890. I'm not sure whether John was born here or in Italy. That would really narrow it down. He was born in 1895 or 1896.

This draft card has so much more info than some others I've seen.

I'm confused on Salvatore's place of birth because of the discrepancy between the draft card which shows Newark and the ship manifest which shows Contursi. Can anyone make out the town where Victor's band was located on Sal's WWI Draft Card?

Biff,

That was my original issue. Carmine and Rosario came to Newark, lived here for approximately 10 years, went back to Contursi and returned in 1907, 1910. My grandmother and Concetta were born in Contursi. I thought that John was born in the US, but not sure about Sal. Concetta's daughters(well into their 90's) are still alive. I'm going to call California to see if they can give me any further help.
