Joseph Francesca Druat/Druata/Duetta DeWitta

Post by nanabella »

I am searching for the name Druat or variances -Joseph was born in Cantalupo in 1773 and was an aide to Napoleon. He immigrated to Canada and his brother (?) remained in Italy growing grapes. Canadians are under the impression that he was French but I have two letters from the brother written from Italy in the early 1800's in English. The family might have been wealthy. Any help would be appreciated.

I suggest that you search under www.google.com using the name(s) and Napoleon in your title. This is research at this point not genealogy. Peter

Hi Nanà excuse my English, I hope understand well:
in Italy are many localities Cantalupo name, but growing grapes is only 1:
is ancient Cantalupo's place in Montefano town (Macerata province-Marche region). Famous is Rosso di Cantalupo( Cantalupo's red wine ).
The surname and different varying, in Italy, those that you have listed do not exist. Perhaps it has been italianyzed in the time...
Moreover Druat surname is tipical of French. I have tried this website:

in version: DURAT , currently this surname exist in Italy, in 15 Commons,in region: Trentino Alto Adige, Veneto, Lombardia, Piemonte.
In this last version Durat, this surname is present in Italy:
- in Piemonte region, in Alessandria province, and, in Alessandria town is a Cantalupo's fraction...
-in Lombardia region, in Milano province (in CERRO MAGGIORE common -Milano province, also here it is a Cantalupo's fraction) and in Lecco province(but in the past Lecco province it made part of Como, and also in OLGIATE COMASCO Como province is a Cantalupo's fraction)..
In French, in the past, around 1762, a Joseph ferdinand Durat here:

Hi Nanà: in your email, specified that Joseph Druat(or similar) comes from Pinerolo in Piemonte region.
Allegated that it was of optimal family.
Other Piemonte's last name, truly much similar, present in Pinerolo

 , of noble origins is Drua. You think this hypothesis possible?

In the past Drua family is origin's place Fossano:
signori=Lord di=of Levaldigi(Cuneo province from year 1252), S. Albano(Cuneo province); consignori =lord with to others di=of Fossano, Romanisio, and Val Vermenagna. All this towns are in Piemont region.

Joseph Francesca Druat/DeWitta/Duetta

Post by W. Jane »

Joseph Francesca Druat who changed his name to Francis DeWitta and settled in Prince Edward County, Ontario, Canada was my third great grandfather. I have a transcription of the letter to which Nanabella refers. Portions of sentences are missing so I think that they were copied by hand and I can't be sure that the original was copied accurately However, in the letters, the name is spelled Druat. In 1851, Francesca's brother, Joseph was living in his father's house in Cantalouppe (sic). Their father had died in 1814 and their mother, Angelique, in 1833. Joseph says he married an heiress. His seven children included Marie, Theresa and Catherine. After his marriage, Joseph moved to Pinerolo.

In Canada, the name becomes Duetta.

Hi Jane: in the recent past I have sended news privately to Nanabella...
I've found the origin place:
-Cantalupa(near Pinerolo-Torino province-Piemonte region).
-Are in Italy only: Druetta and Druetto surname. Not are Duetta.
-Probable Druetta surname are french origins: Druat(french)>become in the time in Italy Druetta>and/or also in other Country become Duetta and Druetto...
To support of this my idea I'Ve sended this Url a Nanabella: http://jbfahy.free.fr/Faremout/html/pag4.html

http://jbfahy.free.fr/Faremout/html/pag1.html

http://63.169.143.2/cgi-bin/genealogy/d ... _1700_1900

-From search, currently Duetta surnames present in USA and Canada, very probable coming from italian original Druetta surname.
-Unfortunately I have cancelled from PC many information sended to Nanabella..on Morel and Bianciotti family etc..but I offer An input very important: the Pinerolo area , comprised Cantalupa, is strong valdesians concentration.. a this URL http://www.apellidositalianos.com.ar/va ... 0VALDENSES in fact Morel and Bianciotti are valdesians..
-For your search :1)you put in chronological order all the information in your possession. Formulated a precise question and you demand a reply from"Archivio di Stato di Torino" http://ww2.multix.it/asto/info.htm sending an email (in italian): astoarchivio@multix.it (I have controlled: they have many documents on years interested of Pinerolo).2) to see microfilms of Cantalupa (Torino)near LSD. 3) to contact Valdesian Church in Torino for other surnames correlates to search: http://www.chiesavaldese.org/indexen.html (english version).

I think i have information for you. I have been told about the story of my 4th great grandfather, i was told Joseph Duetta/Duette from the region of Piedmonte. Personal aide to Napoleon and one of the finest swordsmen in France. l was told he was the personal valet to Napoleon, Napoleon's shaving cup and shaving gear are at the Prince Edward County Museum near Picton Ontario. It was donated by my grandfather after he settled in the area.
Here's how i was told he got to Canada.
Napoleon was sent to Italy as a general to couquer it. His superiors sent him in hopes that he would fail.....he didn't, Joseph Duetta was recruited during this time (spent time in France ) and later captured by the British....after capture he was either to face incarceration or to fight for the British, he chose the later.
He fought during the war of 1812 under general Brant at the battle of Queenston/Lewiston and many others battles, killing many. After the war he was given his freedom and 100 acres of land on the Island in the area of Picton Ontario/Prince Edward County. I know where there is a tattered photo of him as my daughter did a school paper on him last year. It is not available right now as my father has it and is currently in Florida.
