Trianni

Post by mstdfw »

I am looking for contacts regarding the surname Trianni. My Grandfather came to the US in 1912(from 1930 census but I can't find any information from the Ellis Island site), and I am hoping to be able to backtrack to his birthplace in Italy.

He was supposedly born in Calabria on 4/7/1890. But, in searching the present-day distribution of Italian surnames in Italy, there are no Trianni's from Calabria, and most are from Puglia???????????????????

Any information if greatly appreciated.

With additional details, members can help locate that hard to find manifest... :)

First name? Married? Spouse's name? Any children? State in which he lived, or may have gone to initially?

I located one possibility, but without the first name, impossible to know if he is yours.....

The one I located did not come from Cassano, and was not going to New York........the name is surely mispelled, or perhaps he was mistaken under the mothers surname.........

Perhaps when I return late in the day......you will have solved the mystery!!

Hugs,
Lee

wldspirit and suanj, sorry I left out the first name in the initial post, as yeah, that is rather essential.

But Wow!

Thank you so much for the information!!! I am truly grateful.

His name as listed on the 1930 census, Pasquale Trianni appears correct with all the other census information. He had six children (my father was Daniel, the youngest) and a stepson Dominic Scernato. I had no luck tracking him down at the Ellis Island site, but I did find the Pasquale Triano you note suanj.

My Grandfather died in 1933 from eating poisonous mushrooms in Albany NY -the whole family nearly died- and in the city paper (microfilm) they list his name as Triano but with a birthdate of 4/7/1890 in Calabria, the same birthdate and Region as on the draft registration card, which is extremely helpful in linking the name Trianni to the 4/7/1890 birthdate. It appears that Trianni is the 'official' name (except at Ellis Island..and in Cassano allo Ionio?)

I could not find any death certificate for him, as he did not have a Social Security number (he died in 1933 and SS did not start until 1939). I found one for my Grandmother, Antoinette, who died in 1980. My Grandmother was also naturalized in 1954. I could not find a naturalization record for my Grandfather (he probably died before he got it).

Patzie, on the registration card is of course the shortname for Pasquale.

Hmmm......Italian names are very often mistakenly spelled wrong, accents were hard to understand, and so were spelled as the person understood them.....
Also, the place of birth may not be the last place of residence listed on a ship manifest............let's see if there is any other clues we can discover.

Well, I haven't had any further luck on my Grandfather either. I did find a Pasquale Trianni in the Castle Gardens records (prior to Ellis Island immigrants landed there), but the age of the person was 3 yrs -my Grandfather was 22 when he came to the USA. So, that did not go anywhere, but it was very interesting to find a Trianni with the same first name.

As far as my Grandmother is concerned, her marriage license name was Antoinette Epifanio Scarnato (former husbands surname. He died in a construction accident -my late Uncle Doms Father). Where did you find the Befanto surname? Now another twist....

Unclaimed money!! Am I rich.... 8O

Thanks for all your help. I am considering how I can get any info on birth records from Italy, for both my Grandparents, although I have no idea waht tow my Grandmother was from....
