There is an Anna in Essex county for the 1930 census. I don't have a subscription to ancestory so I can only get as far as seeing the names counties etc.

When I searched I put in Guiseppes name and unselected exact match, didn't fill anything else in either.

Says Anna was born about 1929 and Amando instead of Armand born about 1922. Sometimes the names were mispelled.

Thanks Valarie, that is my grandfather. The spelling sure was mangled.

Unfortunately, I don't have a subscription to Ancestry.com. I was at the library using their edition. But the search parameters are different and I only had a hour session, so it was really difficult. I'm hoping someone will post the 1930 cenus for me. And perhaps his WWI draft card.
I never knew my grandfather was a boarder, but it makes absolute sense. He sent for my grandmother in 1920, he must have been saving for enough money to get an apartment.

That other name on the page is not Basile but Barile. These people were close family friends of my grandparents and probably paisans.

I just had to share this amazing coincidence. When I looked carefully at the 1920 census, I realized that my grandfather was a boarder at the home of the Forte family. This turns out to be the family of one of my dearest childhood friends. We were both shocked to find out the connection our grandparents had so many years ago. Although we have been friends since third grade, and our parents knew each other, no one ever mentioned this amazing piece of history. In searching my own family's history, I was able to give a dear friend a good chunk of hers.

What serendipity!!!
