Need help please
Need help please
My great grandfather came to the US between 1896 and 1906. I have the info. re: his death in May 1906 but I have been unable to find anything re: his arrival. His name was Cipriano Iacovitto. He was living in S. Giuliano di Puglia although he may have been born in Casacalenda. 1859. I've tried searching Ellis Island with the least amount of letters possible and Steve Morse as well. When I try to search by just the town, I g0t an error 3x that the internet connection broke. Does anyone have any suggestions where to try next?
Re: Need help please
Are you sure he arrived at Ellis Island and not another port?

Re: Need help please
I checked various spellings of the name, filtered by 1st name and both towns and came up with nothing close. Looked on Ancestry and couldn't find a census either. Where did he live? Do you have names of any other family member? Where did he die? Post whatever other info you have.

Re: Need help please
Well....just found it and clicked to post..........and vj already took care of it! And thanks to wldspirit for the direction!
Look for RI directories for this family. Look for the names Jacovetti and forms of it for census info as well. And now even Tacovitti, ect.

WoW
Now I know why you are Masters. You can't imagine how exciting this is. THe only thing my grandmother knew about him was that he died in RI --in a train fire- and he lived with her uncle in No, Attleboro, MA which is just over the state line. We could never find his grave before she died. With such an odd last name, I never thought it would be so difficult...I tried Yacovitto, Jacovitto but never thought of Tacovitto. Once again, molte grazie. I'll keep you posted at what else I find.

Re: Need help please
One other thing, I noticed on the death certificate that they were notified by his wife. I thought his wife was still in Italy. It could be that there was someone else......it doesn't say her name......but it could be that she had already joined him. How do I search for the Boston port again? I never checked for her anywhere because I never thought she came. Her last name would be Morelli, Maria.
Re: Need help please
Sirena, Boston manifests are on ancestry.com
We'll be happy to check for you.
vj
Do the Morelli's on Cipriano's manifest
look like they may be related? Lines 12&13

Re: Need help please
Just checked the Casacalenda birth index...from 1855 to 1862...and he doesn't appear to be born in Casacalenda. ( I copied the indexes for those years.)
One Iacovetti family...Giuseppe and Maddelena Tozzi...are in Casacalenda. I will check at the library to see if he could have been born later.
Looking like Nicola and Rosa not in Casacalenda at this time.

Re: Need help please
Yes, I would think that the Morellis he came with are brothers-in-law or cousins. S. Giuliano is a frazione. The population is about 800 now. Any of the Morellis listed must be related either brothers-in-law or cousins. My grandmother did say that he was here with her uncle...since I could never find an Iacovitto, I figured it was a Morelli.
Thank you once again for the information that you've found.

Re: Need help please
I received copies of the RI death certificate for my GGF. As posted previously, it confirms the name of the cemetery; however, after contacting them, there is no record of his grave. The name of the funeral home was also listed but no longer exists. Does anyone have an idea of where I can go from here to locate a record of the gravesite?
Re: Need help please
Sirena,
I am going through cemetery records I got from the FHC. You will not believe the mispellings, inaccuracies and crazy alphabetical order in the records!!! I have been through just the letter "B" 4 times so far, and each time I found another family member. If the FHC has the records for your cemetery, I would suggest ordering the films and going through them yourself.
