Angela Catalano from where?

Post by lilbees »

I recently learned of my great grandmother's real name. We always thought it was Marno but in reality (thanks to now having a few death certificates) it gave the names of the parents of my grandfather also confirmed by the certificates of his 2 sisters here in the US.

My great grandfather Antonio Rescigno was from Roccapiemonte. He married Angela Catalano about 1870. I do not know her place of origin. They emmigrated to Tunisia about 1872.

I have sent for Antonio's birth record and possibly a marriage record if they were married in Roccapiemonte.

Does anyone have some info regarding possible regions/areas she may have been from?

Any help would be appreciated.

Would Angela have been naturalized under her maiden name and not her married name of Rescigno? If her maiden name that would narrow it down to just a few of the women.

The children of Vincenzo and Alice (my grandparents) were named as follows:

Antonio Henry Rescigno
Angeline Katherine Rescigno
Henry Joseph Rescigno

If they followed the naming traditions of Italy:

1st born son:
Antonio is the father's father's name
Henry is the mother's father's name

1st born daughter:
Angeline is the father's mother's name
Katherine is the mother's mother's name

2nd born son:
Henry is the mother's father's name
Joseph is the father's mother's father's name

Do I have that right?

If that is right Angela's father's name would be Joseph Catalano.

Right?

if your ancestors followed the italian naming traditions: yes; but also it is possible that many italians followed only the naming tradition of male line...

a little resume:
Rescigno:
1. Antonio Rescigno( Roccapiemonte 1846 circa) and Angela Catalano (?)
a. Genevieve Marie Angele Rescigno–Gabes abt 1874 married at Joseph Virzi
b. Vincenzo Rescigno-Gabes 16 December 1886,
c. Josephine( Giuseppea)Gabes- 10 Jan 1883-death : 26 NOV 1943 in Chicago IL ; married at Michael DINA and lives in Chicago
d. Charles???
---------------------

VIRZI:
a. Alfonso VIRZI( born in Italy-june 1845-death: Chicago 12/23/1906; imm. 1891 ) married abt 1865 at Agostina ?born in Italy march 1844-death: Chicago 06/08/1914; imm. 1896 )
a. Joseph Virzi ( Italy-abt 1864; imm.1898); married in 1890 at Genevieve Marie Angele Rescigno(Gabes abt 1874; imm……)
i. Agostina Rescigno Italy?? june 1890/1
ii. Angela Rescigno Italy ??feb 1894
iii. Jane Rescigno Italy?? march 1895
iv. Alfonsino Rescigno Italy?? Jan 1898
v. Marietta Rescigno Illinois feb 1899
b. Salvatore Virzi (born in Italy feb 1871; imm.1895) married in 1898 at Rosina… ( born in Italy jan 1879; imm.1896)
i. Alfonso Virzi born in Chicago may1899-death Chicago 10/10/1901
well if the 1900 census abt Joseph Virzi is correct, the last daughter Marietta, it was born in Chicago; so Genevieve Marie Angele made 2 trips? 1 in 1898, and the second in 1900/1.. right?

for to have the church marriage act of Joseph Virzi and Genevieve Marie Angele, you can write:
M. le Chancelier de la Prélature de Tunis
4 rue d'Alger, 1000 Tunis, TUNISIE
and after they reply you must send 6,10 euros for the act cost; you must to say that the marriage was Gabes in 1890 year- repertoire 7.

Hi Suanj, hope you had a nice day.

The family tree you located is from a younger cousin. She was a baby the last time I saw her. She is Sheila. Her mother was the daughter of Josephine (Guiseppa) Rescigno and Michael Dina. Because of her postings back in 2001 we compared family information. There was no Charles. The Charles she mentioned was my father's half brother from New York. She Called Angele Marie Rescigno by the name of Genevieve. That is not the correct name. Genevieve was the name of one of the daughters of Josephine who she only knew as Jennie.

Since I picked up the research on my part of the family I have been able to complete quite a bit. She has been a great help giving some of the information from her branch of the family.

Thank you for the information about the consulate. I was just given the information about the Italian consulate with their mailing address, etc., today from another family member. Good timing. I do really appreciate all the assistance you have given me and so many others.

I mailed a request today to the consulate. I hope that won't take too long. On the Catholic's in Tunisia website I had located the marriage of Angele Marie and Guiseppe Virzi which also tempted me to also send for the record of their marriage.

I also have requested the birth records of Vincenzo, Guiseppa and Angele Marie from Tunisia and, if possible, the death records for Antonio, Angela and (you were right on about this one a while back) Antonio's sister Antoinette. She is the aunt my father sent boxes to for so many years in Tunisia.

I have death records for Vincenzo, Josephine, and Angele Marie from Chicago. They also confirmed the names of Antonio and Angela as their parents

On the Italian Immigrants Sicily database I located an Angela Catalano emmigration to Tunisia b. 1898. Will need to send a letter there for a possible birth record in San Vito lo Capo, Trampani. It may not be the right commune but it is a start. I only have an approximate year of birth of 1856. Still checking other provinces in Sicily for Catalano. Once that search is finished I will move on to Calabria.

Small side note: Learned from the birth records of Vincenzo's 3 children that Marie Virzi was the midwife who helped to deliver them in Chicago.

Thanks again for your hard work. Any additional information you find would be great.

Regards,
lilbees

A little overstuffed yesterday, sorry.

Thank you for the address for the Church Archives. I will try to send a request today for the Virzi marriage. It will be a great help in documenting the information I have.

Suanj, received the marriage act for Giuseppe Virzi and Angela Marie Rescigno. This confirms the parents names for Angela (name not Genevieve). Finally getting confirmation of some facts.

Thank you.
