Are you looking for an Italian surname? Do you need more information about your family heritage?
This is the right place to start your genealogy search.
I'm looking for family info. Vito Turi, b1875 Italy,d 1922 USA; Margherite De Carlo Turi, b 10/19/1878 Bari, d 1957 USA. Vito had a brother Sante, b 1880 Italy, d 1970. The two brothers emigrated to the USA in September 1903, on the ship Calabria. Vito was married in Italy to Margherite De Carlo, who emigrated in 1904. Sante married Silvia, from the Rome area, b 1885 Italy, d 1981 USA. No info re the Turis past this. Know Margherite's parents were Vito De Carlo and Anna Bafonti. No further info there. Can't find Margherite on any passenger lists. Would like to go back farther with both families. Vito and Sante, was living in Alberobello before emigration. Thank you!
Margherite's manifest. She emmigrated much later, or this was a second trip. She was traveling with children Isabella, Anna, Rafaele and Vito, left father Vito in Italy and met husband Vito Turi.
Next look at the films that you would like to order. I've taken the liberty of finding Alberobello for you. Write down the film numbers and go to your FHC to order. The cost is approximately $5.50 per film. It takes about 2 to 4 weeks for the films to come in so you can view. The films I found cover the years 1809 through 1900 so you should be able to find the birth acts (nati) and marriage banns of the relatives you mentioned. From those you will be able to find out their parents names, occupations, residence and ages. You should also be able to find their death acts (morti) also. Here is the link -
According to the manifests for Vito and Sante (1903, then 1911 for Sante's 2nd trip), they were both born in Alberobello and their father's name was Raffaele. In 1903 they were going to a friend Nicola Leogrande's home at 38/40 Prospect Street, Patterson, New Jersey. I have a small database that I compiled for my friend Marianna d'Onofrio. Her grandmother was Rosa Turi of Alberobello, and her family lived in Paterson at one time. I'm fairly certain that she had relatives on Prospect Street. When my FHC reopens next week, I'll look for Vito, Sante, and Raffaele Turi. I noticed that Margherita di Caro's manifest stated that she was also born in Alberobello, so I'll look for her too (although I don't think that di Caro is a common surname in that comune - I do note that there is a concentration of di Caro around Bari). Also, you write that her surname is di Carlo, yet the manifest seems to read di Caro. Do you know which is correct?
Thanks Mary Jo, Elizabeth, and John for the help and suggestions; I'll check into the FHC, but I'm a disabled vet, and my income is limited. I usually stick to the free stuff. I had thoughts that my grandmother traveled back to Italy, possibly to give birth to my Uncle Nick [1910]; this info seems to confirm that. I wasn't aware that Sante returned to Italy. Maybe he went to get his girl for marriage--Silvia, or to accompany Margherite. She came from around Rome but I have no maiden name. We always knew the name as De Carlo. But, I guess it could be different. I'm open to corrections.

Valarie: I'm the same ct5topaz from the Irish genealogy; my mail program was acting up and I had to use ct5topaz to sign up for the Irish site. You provided some great resources again, and I'm very appreciative. I'll go with Frasconi; too bad I can't get back to Italy to go further. Everything seems to stop there. The Ralph Turi in the 1920 census was not my Uncle Raffaele , so there may be another Turi floating around. The 'Torre' in the 1910 census appears to be a product of bad handwriting, but being married three years gave me their approximate wedding date. Too bad Vito didn't answer that question. It would really have been nice to know the wedding date. In the 1911 manifest, Margherita notes Vito 'Niclola'? as her father. Since many other names in the column are given names only, it appears that Nicola was her father's middle name. Since the 1920 Camilla is single, I'll accept Silvia's maiden name of Frasconi as well. Thanks again.
nephew Raffaele Turi 17, a possibility 1910 manifest page 2

Another brother? Giuseppe Turi 33 1906 manifest

Valarie: Many thanks for your extensive help to me. I'm very grateful. From your info and my analysis of the data images, I can estimate that grandfather Vito had at least three brothers: Sante, Giuseppe, and an as yet unnambed third brother probably in the Foggia area---the father of Raffaele, who came over to visit his Uncle Sante. He's not Vito's kid; Sante was childless; and Giuseppe had two girls at the time; and Raffaele [named after his grandfather] lived in a different town. With the last name of Turi, and as a nephew of Sante, I think it's safe to assume an unnamed brother.
My difficulty now is the timeline with Vito and Margherita; Uncle Ray [Raffaele] was born in 1907; but Vito came to the US in 1903; he must have gone back, but I can't find another manifest listing him; Margherita and the children came over in 1911; since Vito [Nick] was born in Italy in 1910, Vito again must have gone back. On the other hand, Margherita on the 1911 manifest said she had been in the US at an earlier date for four years. Yet, I can't find an earlier voyage for her. And since she and Vito had ten kids pretty easily, why is there a six year drought between Anna [1901] and Raffaele [1907]? Thanks again, and I'll have to keep pluggin' away.
If you look closely at Raffaele's manifest, you will see that he leaves his father Giovanni in San Severo.
Vito was probably in the US by himself for a few years, hence the gap in children. You must also remember that childbearing wasn't as simple as it is today. Miscarriages, stilborn babies, and infant mortality were great problems.
I'll check again for other manifests. I'm sure someone here will find them.

Another thought:
Have you been in contact with the author of this
tree on rootsweb? (assuming it isn't you)
I noticed the tree has several Nov 2007 updates,
so the author's email is probably still valid. Willstaedt Simpson Families
Valarie
Valarie: Yes, I have. Bruce Willstaedt is the second husband of my cousin Bill Stevens first wife, Dianna Simpson. Simple? Anyway, we've been in contact, and my input has convinced him that the entire Stevens side of the family is wrong as he has it listed. And we start over, right? Here's to details.
Why is it difficult for most persons to read a Latin document? You may think that it is because they never studied Latin in school. The real answer is that some of the words appear unfamiliar to you. On the positive side, you probably already know enough Latin words to pick out a few of them in a d...
