The tonioli family name

Post by kaibab200 »

I am very new to geneology, I have really never done much, but have recently become interested in learning about my roots. I have read much and it appears that I may have a frustrating, but hopefully fulfilling future looking up my family name. Anyway, I have been able to thus far search back to my Great, great grandfather george tonioli who arrived here in the 1890s via census data, however there is no record of how he arrived or of any family members. Tonioli is such a rare name that I was wondering if there is anyone who has heard of or has information about this name or if they could point me in the right direction to get accross the ocean with my g/g/ grandfathers name in order to link and get further back.

Thanks for any help.

Hi, and welcome to the forum. I don't know if you looked at ship's manifests yet, but there are very few Toniolis who immigrated. Do you know where he first settled when he arrived? Wife's name? Children?

Tonioli, Angelo Vestone 21 1885 1906
2 Tonioli, Bortolo Bedollo 33 1865 1898
3 Tonioli, Dco Nogent St Mano, France 30 1877 1907
4 Tonioli, Ettore Italy 28 1881 1909
5 Tonioli, Giuseppe Velo d'Ostico 22 1884 1906
6 Tonioli, Guido Towa 26 1881 1907
7 Tonioli, Valentino Loria, 22 1885 1907
8 Tonioli, Vigilio Lona, Austria 25 1885 1910

Note two things:

Some of these people came from what was at one time Austria, and one from France.

George is not an Italian name. Italian would be Giorgio, but names like Guido or Virgilio could have been Americanized to George. He also could have just picked George.

You can tell by using this website that the name is rare and definitely Northern Italian.

http://www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi/genera.html

(Put in Tonioli where it says cognome, and click the arrow)

Hope this helps.

I did look at the ships manifestos and had no luck. The family story is that he came over possibly via canada with a brother. Have never found anything on his brother. He found work in the mines in utah and was killed in a mine blast leaving one young son, my great great grandfather, who had little information about him as he was so young. I have figured that the name is so rare that those with it in Italy, must surely be related. Has anyone had luck contacting folks in Italy and learning anything about their family. Any ideas on how to go about this?

Ancestry.com has border crossings from Canada, but I didn't find anything. Do you have census records? Do you know George's wife's maiden name? Are the entries at the Family History Center website from you?
Some people have had luck tracking down Italian relatives, but you really need a town of origin for a search. If you can post a little more info on the family, there are people here with unbelievable skills at tracking down family.

No I haven't ever posted anything before, but you guys have come up in a weekend, what it took me a little while to do. I know the judges name is bruno tonioli, probably a little famous to really listen to somebody about genealogy. That post by Suanj is him and that is exactly how far I have gotten. I guess the search is on for a town of origin. I will let you know how I do.

Yes most of this information is about my great grandfather louis tonioli, who's father is george tonioli, who on one census had his country of origin as from switzerland. If you look at where the toniolis are now in italy, they seem to be centered around bologna. There are so few that I would assume that if I could get information about any of the toniolis in the area, they would have to be related at some point. That is my next project, as I cannot find any ancesters for george tonioli, I will just try to find general information on the family name in italy.

Hi My name is George Tonioli I live in Central Florida. Am orig. from New York.
I believe the Tonioli name was shortened from Antonelli.
George and Bartolo came from a little town in the n Italian alps called Levico. As far as i know bartolo was my g-g grandfather, my sister has more info.
I went to Levico, but couldn't get much info. The church with all the records had burned down years before. It is a charming town in a beautiful setting.
If I can help with more let me know.
I will be watching this site for awhile

Tonioli is listed inthe Italian surname dictionary as an abbreviation of Antoni, however the actual abbreviation is Toniolli,Tonolli and Tunioli. There are very many other variations, alterations and derivations of the base name as well.

Further the origin of the surname Antoni is Antonius which is most likely of Etruscan origin which gained popularity with Christianity and the worship of Saint Anthony.
