Nicola Gigliotti and Giovanna Mancuso

Post by Erbogi »

Hey there!
I'm looking for any info on two of my great-grandparents Nicola Gigliotti and his wife Giovanna Mancuso. Nicola Gigliotti was born in 1874 (or at least thereabout) and Giovanna Mancuso in 1872. There were both from Calabria and were married there. I'm trying to find out what specific town in Calabria they were from. Any tips? I'm also looking for any certificates (birth, marriage, etc).
Lastly, I'd like to find out when and if my great-grandfather Nicola Gigliotti became an American citizen, as it is important for applying for Italian citizenship. Any thoughts on how I could find his naturalization document?

Thanks a lot!!

Hi Eric :D and Welcome to the Forum!

specific town in Calabria
Depending on the immigration year, ship's
manifests usually have the last residence in
Italy, often the birth town.
WWI & WWII Draft Registration Cards often
have this information too.

find his naturalization document
Finding information on Naturalization records
usually depends on where they completed
their paperwork.

Clues to finding these records are usually in their
US Census records.

We would be happy to help you look, but
we would need a bit more info:
- where they settled in the US
- children's names
- anything else you think may help

Thanks!

Dear Valarie,

Thanks for the speedy response!! Eventually they settled in upstate New York. They lived Utica for a while, but eventually settled in Geneva, New York. Some of their children's names: Joe, Rose, Samuel (my grandfather), Vincenza. They had more children, but I can't remember all of them off the top of my head. According to the ship manifests of Ellis Island it says he was from Nicastro (now part of Lamezia Terme) and she was from Decollatura, but due to the fact that a first rather artificial search of their records didn't provide me with any info, I started to wonder if maybe the Ellis Island info wasn't correct. According to a first cousin of mine, Nicola Gigliotti came to the US more than once: at least in 1893, 1887, but the only time I can find on the Ellis Island website is 1902.
Also, some of my grandfather's siblings changed the spelling of the last name to Gillotti, but my grandfather kept the original spelling.
You may also want to keep in mind that sometimes they would use anglicized versions of their names, such as Nicholas and Jeannie.

Hope this helps!!

Thanks a lot for the help!!

Hey Eric,
here's one clue
1918 WWI Draft Registration Card
naturalized...

He won't have a WWII card
born 13 Mar 1874
(started with men born 28 Apr 1877)

Wow!! Thanks a lot you guys!!
I'm going to have to process all this information for a while. Also I will ask about those cousins/brothers.
So it says he petioned for citizenship in 1905?
One of those Nicola Gigliotti's is correct, I think. It corresponds with the data from Ellis Island. So that's good!
Thanks for all the work!!
