Help with name

Post by Conti832 »

For a long time I have been researching names in my hometown from Pofi
Castro Del Volsci Area of Italy. One name I could not find was Combine.

Today I was looking at old death records and found a another local name
Campagna and it had this after it (Combine). In fact I saw another one as
well.Is it that the Man who died had his named changed from Campagna to
Combine or what?

This is interesting since Campagna as a surname is quite popular even to this day in pofi but Combine has no apparent surname. The word dictionary reflects that in addition to the word meaning combination it also means by chance or a coincidence, You can write to the town anagrafe office and ask why the discrepany for the speific Campagna you are referring to. On a hunch I would say that Combine was an AKA (also known as) for Campagna for this specific individual and was added to his legal surname but it is only my subjective interpreatation withut any foundation. =Peter=

Another thought. If you say the name Campagna or more likely Campagno very phontetically...what does it sound similar to? Cam-pine-ya and maybe even Cam-bina-ya. I don't speak Italian, but I think it could sound like Combine. What does everyone else think?

I still think it is a dictionary word rather than a name since Combine means chance or coincidence in addiiton to combination. It might have been used as a pseudo surname. =Peter=

If I understand you correctly, you found the name Campagna Combine [a double surname] in a couple of death records from Pofi. If so, then it would not appear that Carbone is an anglicized version of Campagna. However, Combine might be a sopranome, or a second family surname. A sopranome was often used to distinguish among several branches of the same family. In Lazio, a sopranome was often used with the surname Campagna. A surname search at Italia.indettaglio.it returns nine variations: Campagna Covre, Campagna Esdra, Campagna Matarese, Campagna Mucha, Campagna Pazzetta, Campagna Profili, Campagna Pulejo, Campagna Taddei, and Campagna Villa. While Campagna Combine wasn't among the returns, it may have been a double surname in Pofi in the past. I have noted in other areas that families occasionaly adopt the sopranome as the actual surname (e.g., Marcone Cosco became Cosco in Campobasso). Of course this is all speculation on my part, but it may be something to keep in mind during your research.

Any chance you can post the death act so we can take a look at it?

Another option
If you have his name, birth date, wife, children, etc
perhaps we could follow his records backwards to see
if/when there was a name change.
