Migliaccio-Gelsomino

Post by jk123 »

:D Looking for any help on my GGrandparents and beyond
Guiseppe b.1878 in C Giovanni
Carmela Migliaccio b. 1883 in C Giovanni
They had two daughters born in Italy - Rosa (Rose)b 1901 in Palermo and Frances b 1905 also in Palermo
All immigrated to America btwn 1910-1911
Carmela had brothers Luis (Louis) and Frank (Francesco)
Their mother is Rosalia Agelao and all I can find on her is that she came thru Ellis Island in 1907 and she was a widow at that time.
Any information would be much appreciated.
Thanking you in advance.

Thanks Biff. I was hoping to find more info regarding their life in Italy. I just don't know where to start. I don't read or write Italian :(
I've gotten as much info from the Ellis Island site that I can. I was searching MA, NY and PA for more on my GGrandmother but either the spelling is wrong or she re-married. Someone told me that Italian women often keep their maiden names and only name the children with the husbands name.
My grandparents went to PA after they immigrated then came to MI. There was a spelling change along the way (now Jelsomeno).
Any suggestions as to what I can do next short of travelling to Sicily (although I'd love to some day!)?
Thanks again.

Biff! You are the greatest!! :D
I could not pull up the manifest for Rosalia and this helps alot! I can now search in Lawrence MA. And was unsure about another brother named Salvatore. There may yet be another one - Luigi but that may be Luis.
Well this excites me and gives me another direction to search!
One more question. Is there some way to get records from the town in Italy? I know the name changed to Enna back in the '20's I believe but again I don't write Italian.
Thanks again!! :D :D :D

Hi Jan and Biff

There are microfilms from LDS for CastroGiovanni (Enna)

Civil records 1820 through 1910 for birth, death, marriages etc.
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library ... +Enna+%28E++

Census records 1569 through 1815
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library ... a+%28Enna2++

Find a Family History Center near you, write down the films you'd like to view and go in to order. Takes about 4 weeks to receive and cost is about $5.50 USD per film
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library ... et_fhc.asp

Hope this helps

Hi Jan, don't worry it's not a stupid question at all.

Based on the years of birth you state - Giuseppe born 1878 and Carmela born 1883 you should probably start with these films

Nati 1866-1879 - FHL INTL Film # 1916183 (for Giuseppes year of birth)
Nati 1878-1889 - FHL INTL Film # 1816184 (for Giuseppes and Carmela's year's of birth)
Matrimoni 1885-1910 Cittadinanze 1886-1910 Indici Decennali 1866-1910 - FHL INTL Film # 1916352 - Marriage of Giuseppe and Carmela, Citizen records for both and 10 year index for both

Nati = Birth
Morti = Death
Matrimoni = Marriage

These 3 films should give you a good starting point. As for their daughters do you know if they were born in the comune of Palermo in the province of Palermo or another comune in Palermo province?

Let me know if you have any questions on the films.

Hey Biff thanks for that info. Then Jan will also want to order the following film for Rosa and Francesca's births
Nati 1900-1910 FHL INTL Film # 1916349

Civil records of Leonforte cover the years 1841-1865 - Biff do you think Jan might find Rosalia's birth act in these records?
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library ... ato+civile++

Three different churches for Leonforte so a baptismal record should exist
Registri ecclesiastici, 1612-1915 Chiesa cattolica. San Giovanni Battista (Leonforte, Enna)
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library ... +1612-1915++
Registri ecclesiastici, 1657-1929 Chiesa cattolica. Santo Stefano (Leonforte, Enna)
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library ... +1657-1929++
Registri ecclesiastici, 1884-1910 Chiesa cattolica. Maria Santissima Annunziata (Leonforte, Enna)
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/Library ... +1884-1910++

Let me know if you think any of these links should be removed Biff......Jan these films work the same way as the other films I referenced.

If we've got the right family, Rosalia was in Lawrence MA in 1907 (her manifest), in Boston MA in 1908 (son Ignazio's manifest) and in New York NY in 1910 (son Salvatore's manifest). And she may have previously been in Buenos Aires as written on her manifest. I'm off to look for a manifest for son Luigi to see where she was when he emigrated.
