Seminara - Sicily
I am researching my Grandfather's family.
I know my GGrandparents (Michael and Rosa Seminara) arrived in either 1899 (1920 census info) or 1900 (1930 census info).
I know that they travelled with 5 children (Ignazio, Vincenzo, Mary, Sadie and John) ranging from 14 +/- to 4 +/- yrs of age and such a large group should be fairly ealy to find in the passenger lists - but I have had no success in finding their info in any port of call along the eastern coast.
Info is also uncertain as to where they were from:
* census' read Palermo, Italy (province I assume)
* family members say Alimena
* a WWI draft registry puts it as Armena (as father's birthplace) and Colesaro as register's birtplace.
So much conflicting info how do I determine right info and bad info?
Any help would be wonderful!
Thanks ~Denise

Re: Seminara - Sicily
Do you have where you found them in 1920 and 1930?
Maybe they didn't come over all at the same time... For instance, I found an Ignaz(r)io coming over in 1899, to join father Michele

Re: Seminara - Sicily
From children's birth places.... we may find them in NY in 1900 and CT in 1910....
Michael lists that he came over 1899... and if his son Ignazio was going to live with him, it would mean Michael came over sometime between Jan 1st - March 13th, 1899... assuming everything is on the up and up...

Re: Seminara - Sicily
First of all - THANK YOU!! You have all accomplished more in hours than I have been able to accomplish in 6 years of dabbling at this research! What you were able to unearth is amazing and I have to confess has made me tear up for all of your help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Finding the manifest under her maiden name.. natralization papers.. the 1910 Census with their names spelled incorrectly.. I would never have found this information! Words can't express what I am feeling right this moment!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Okay - but back to the information....
Rosa (assuming she went full term in her pregnancies) was three months pregnant when she arrived in the US (Sept 1899) with her 6th child (out of 11 total) being born in March 1900. So Michele must (I hope was) in Italy in June of 1899, and Ignazio was coming over to see his father in August... how long would this trip have taken on this ship across the ocean in 1899?
Thank you all again for your assistance on this research - you're all the best!

OOPS! I hadn't been able to see the first manifest for Ignazio - that was March 13th 1899 and he was coming to his father...
Let's hope the March birth in 1900 wasn't full term - I really don't want to be the bearer of that news to the family!! Yikes that's only 6 months of pregnancy IF she conceived when she reached NY!!

Re: Seminara - Sicily
I believe it took about 20+ days to make the trip....
Michael could have surely made the trip back in the Spring.... maybe to prepare the family for the journey and tie up any loose ends in his native country...
Nothing is beyond possibility...
