Aversa or John Davis!!!

Post by slikbdatfool »

I have done my geneology up to my great great great grandfather "John Davis" but all of his census reports state that he was born in Italy and both of his parents were born in Italy?!.. I think he may have changed his name.

I contacted a distant relative and she said his name may have been Aversa. I have heard another account where his name was Daviano or Davisto or something similar. Nobody in my family knows.

Here is the information I have on him.

-John Davis born Italy abt 1816
-married to Hanover (Irish Women)
-3 Children Mary A. E. Davis, John F. Davis, Samuel A. Davis
-1st child born in New Orleans Louisiana in 1856, so he must of immigrated around that time.
-in 1880 he was in Natchez Mississippi
-neice Adalin Petonia lived with him in Natchez she was born abt 1868

No immigration or emmigration records no marriage certificates.

If anybody has any information or help I would greatly greatly appreciate it.

Mark Davis (Aversa??)

Im sure it is the above John Davis from Italy because we can traced him through his son Samuel A. Davis.

Is there anyway I am going to be able to figure out his real name?

His neice was named Adalin Petania. Is that an Italian name and if so wouldn't that make his last name Petania or was it different in how people were named in 1816 in Italy?

Name could also be D'Aversa (o)

Patania is an Italian name.

I believe I am a part of this Davis family. Did you guys hear about one of John Davis' son's most likely John F. Davis having a mulatto son named James Davis born 1886 in Natchez, Mississippi.

Dear Slickwhatever there are about 100+ c ities, towns and villages stretching from Sicily to the french swiss borders having persons surnamed Patania. Go to www.gens.labo.net/en/cognomi and seek out the surname distribution and if you can zero in on the region or the province of origin then you can go to www.paginebianche,.it and put in Patania inthe first line and name of the region, The initials of the province (XX) or the town of origin if known and click CERCA for any posible relatives bearing that surname and possible family first names. =Peter=

John is also my gg grandfather. He was born in Sorrento, Italy, in 1811 (according to his obit). His wife's name was Honora Haley, born abt 1828 in Ireland. His original name was either D'Aversi or Aversi (my maternal grandfather was named Anthony Aversi James Grady. Other than that, we don't know a whole lot about John Davis. If you want to contact me offlist (kearney@bothwell.cx) I'll share what I have.
