About England & Wales, FreeBMD Marriage Index: 1837-1983
This database is a searchable, digitized version of the indices of civil registrations in England and Wales, reported quarterly to the General Register Office (GRO) in London. This index spans the years between 1837 and 1983. Approximately 50% of the names between 1837 and 1900 have been transcribed thus far. You need the information found in an original index to request a copy of a marriage certificate for the individual referenced.
"On 1 July 1837 a civil registration system for births, marriages and deaths was introduced in England and Wales. Registration was undertaken by civil registrars who reported to the Registrar General at the General Register Office (GRO) in London, now part of the Office for National Statistics (ONS). Copies of anyone's birth, marriage or death certificates can be obtained by the public. They are vital to family historians because of the genealogical information that they include." (Mark D. Herber, Ancestral Trails, Genealogical Publishing Company, Inc., 1998)
Since the original birth, marriage and death registers are not open to the public, getting access to the information on one of these certificates is done by first searching the national birth, marriage and death indexes, that have been created by the GRO for this purpose. The indexes for the three events are each divided into quarterly volumes, with the names for each quarter listed alphabetically. Once an entry in one of the indexes is found, you are then able to use that information to order of copy of a death, marriage or birth certificate from the GRO/ONS.
Note: Names were entered into the volume of the quarter in which notification of the event was received, not necessarily the quarter in which the event actually occurred.

Re: now i have to look in france aswell
Hi Peter !
I think the BS was only a notation for 'British Subject'
in the ancestry.com transcription.

Re: now i have to look in france aswell
Tenby bet you're pleased. I sent an email to the Mayor of St Germain de Livet on Saturday and I had a reply from him yesterday this is his reply. He has given me an address to write to. I was very surprised and pleased to receive a reply as quick as that. So Tenby dont waste time go ahead and write or send an email if you have the email address.
