need help from the experts...

Post by fredoniapeaches »

So far in my own research, I've been able to come to the conclusion, that my great grandmother Elvira Capobianca, who was born 15 Feb 1887 in Caserta, most likely in Roccaromana...I have found her parents names on her SS application as Domenic Capobianca and Mariuccia Deana. Her Aunt had lived with her and my great grandfather during the 1910 census, and before that her aunt (Angela Deana) is listed living with Domenic Capobianca and his wife. this Domenic I can find no where else, and I'm wondering if he was Elvira's brother or cousin...

And knowing those good Catholic Italians...I'm willing to bet the farm, that Elvira was not an only child. But she always told my aunt, (her Daughter) that she had no family in America.

anyway...as far as Family for Elvira ...I"m stumped. I have all her children, and a whole bunch of the DiLorenzo side of my family (the craziness she married into) but i don't have much to go on for her side of the family. and I've not heard back from any of the parishes that I wrote to in Italy. any help would be soooooo welcome.

I noticed that in this site:

http://www.fultonhistory.com/

there are severals newspaper articles dated 1902 that are talking about a possible kidnapping for Elvira Cappabianca... Did you see them?

KIDNAPPERS STILL
AFTER ITALIAN GIRL

Olvira Cappabianca's Guardian Feared
She Would be Stolen and Sent
Her to Shelter.
Olvira Cappabianea, the pretty little 14-
year-old Italian girl who figured in a kidnupping
sensation, one week ago last night,
was taken to the shelter 1-aat night by her
guardian uno'.e, Dean Sulvan, a barber of
No. 143 West avenue, who became convinced
from certain things that he saw
Saturday night and yesterday tba* conspirators
were again trying to steal the
girl away from him.
Salvan telephoned to police headquarters
at about 10 o'clock la*t night and reported
to Sergeant Mehle, in charge, that
he wanted an» officer to come to his place,
o*» he feared the girl was going to be again
stolen. Sergeant Mehle detailed Special
Officer Yawnvan to answer the call. Yawman
found Salvan in a great state of excitement.
He said thnt on Saturday night
three strange men entered his barber shop
and got shaved.
Salvan became alarmed'at their talk and
feared they were looking for his niece.
They asked for his sister and wanted to
see her to talk with her, they saiid. Salvan
live* with his sister in rooms at the
rear of the shop. Last night his niece
began to dress up and Salvan feared that
she would be stolen if she went on the
street.
During the past week, Salvan said, a
man who has run a saloon in the vicinity
of the cold storage plant on Maple street,
came to him and interceded for Frank
Scales, who was suspected of collusion
with Pietro Callandrini in the attempt to
kidnap the girl n week ago. At that time
Scales asked the girl to go for a walk and
took her to the New York Central station,
where Pietro awaited them with tickets
for Syrucuse.
The girl was taken from the two by
Officer Hoey just before the train left the
depot. She did not want to go away with
Pietro. It is understood that Pietro wants
to marry the 14-year-old girl, but that she
is indifferent.

Elvira, in her 1901 arrival manifest declared to go to her Uncle S.re Diana (Salvatore Diana)...
Myabe her "Guardian" Dean Salvan was her uncle Diana Salvatore??
:?
I noticed that in the newspaper article Dean Salvan's address is 143 West avenue... the address that Elvira's gave at her arrival was 105? West Avenue....

WOAH! ok...i have her ship manifest...that was one of the first things i found, then i found her marriage record, and i have all her census' and i have her SS application and her death cert.

but that whole story about kidnapping!! WOAH!!

on one census...her aunt Angela Deana lived with a Domenic Capobianca and his wife...and then 10 years later...she lived with Elvira and Michele...Elvira came here to specifically to marry Michele...it was arranged...there is record of him coming back from Italy as a teenager...probably to go over to meet her, so that they would know each other when she got here.

that whole kidnapping thing!! wow...I'm still just in shock! my great great grandfather (michele's father) bought a house in Rochester on Maple around 1905...so these street names in that story are totally ringing bells here...crazy!

you guys are awesome. thanks.

Don't know how to connect these ....

From the site:
http://www.libraryweb.org/rochcitydir/c ... table.html

I found a 1896 City directory for Rochester about Angela Diana:
http://www.libraryweb.org/rochcitydir/i ... 96co-d.pdf

Diana Angela, fruit, 197 West av. h 6 Canal
Diana Savatore, clerk, 197 West av. h 6 Canal

Hope this too can help!
