lena Nigrelli Romano, Citizenship Papers

Post by Romano1970 »

Hi all,

My grandmother ( Carmela , lena Romano) I know for sure had a Social Security card under her name I believe she had to get one after my grandfather Lorenzo Romano passed away. From my other post I tried to enter her name in the Passaic county office for Naturalization papers to declare citizenship but I could not find anything on her.
http://records.passaiccountynj.org/pres ... x?op=basic

Any ideas as to where to look for the papers?? Would she not have to be naturalized before she became a citizen?

Can you tell us when she was born or when she died? Where did she live? You probably have that information posted on another thread but its easier if you provide that info here

Of course. it was silly of me not to do that in the first place.

I recieved her birth certificate from Mussomeli and her full name at birth was :

Nigrelli, Carmela Gaetana Salvatrice. Fathers name was Francesco Nigrelli, Mothers name was Marianna Piazza.

She was born in Mussomeli Sicilia July 9 1893.
Came to America in April 1920 I believe
Lived at 295 Oak Street passaic NJ After being married to my grandfather Lorenzo Romano. He was a registered Alien who did not become a citizen. I am not sure when she actually applied for the soc sec card.
Died in Clifton , Passaic County NJ in 1971 August.

If the info is there for the death index, why is it so difficult for me to find any kind of citizen ship papers. I thought for sure I would be able to pull them up in the Passaic county clerks site.

I don't know but I also have been trying using ancestry and footnote. If its out there we will find it. Are there any notations on her ship manifest when she arrived from Italy? Sometimes if a person made more than one voyage, there would be a notation on the manifest with a naturalization date. Its a longshot but worth looking into...maybe?

I might be wrong but I believe a person could get a Social Security number and apply for benefits without becoming a citizen.

Hello Biff.

I think you may be correct in that. I know that is the case nowadays, but was it also like that back then??

Hello Nuccia , Biff , Peter.

I just had a thought regarding my grandmother. At some point she or my Grandfather Lorenzo Romano should have had a drivers liscense. Possibly not in the early years but maybe later? Is there a way for me to see that info or do I have to get intouch with the dreaded NJ dept of motor vehichles.

I am wondering..

Have you requested her immigration and citizenship files or tried? I know there have been some changes but perhaps there is something in there (if you can access it under FOIA) that could help.

I would think for the drivers license you would have to contact the Ministry but I'm not sure how much luck you would have with that. But you can always try.

Freedom of Information Act. Hopefully these sites can help. Its not fun but it will provide a lot of good information.

http://www.state.gov/m/a/ips/
http://www.usimmigrationsupport.org/foia.html

Not sure at the moment about the other sites. As I said, some things have changed but I remember being able to write away for the complete Citizenship and Immigration file of my ancestors. Unfortunately most of that information is on my other computer which died last year and I have not had the time to retrieve it all. Hoping that someone will come in and help on this on.
