Catalano from San Roberto, Reggio Calabria

Post by chcatalano »

Looking for parents/siblings of Georgio Catalano b. 20 Aug 1887 in (I believe) San Roberto, Reggio Calabria. His first child was named Joseph, so I assume his father was Giuseppi Catalano.
He arrived in the US on 28 June 1906 and was traveling with Alessio Morino and Carmelo Lagano. They were traveling to Buffalo, NY to join Georgio's brothers Francesco and Carmese (?Carmine).

Welcome to IG!!
Before we proceed, can you tell us what you have collected in way of US records?
Did the family always reside in Buffalo?
Can you provide the name of any spouses? Known children? Birthdates or year?
Look forward to your reply!! :)

I have US Census records for 1910, 1920, and 1930.
He was in Buffalo in 1910 living with his wife Maria (Bagarozza).

In 1920 and 1930 he was in Dunkirk NY.

1920 Census (10 January 1920):
25 Main St (Rent) Dunkirk, NY, Ward 1, District 117 (page 22)
Age 33 Married
Wife: Mary (age 26)
Children:
Joseph 9
Patrick 8
Carl 5
Frank 3 3/12
Anthony 1 4/12

1930 Census (4 April 1930):
309 Swan St (Own, $2000 value) Dunkirk, NY, District 20 (page 5) Family has a radio
Age 43 Married
Wife: Mary (age 37)
Children:
Joseph 18
Patsy 17
Carmine 15
Frank 13
Anthony 11
Peter 9
Antonette 8
Leonard 5
Rose 3

I have found two WWI registration cards for George Catalano (one from Buffalo and one from Dunkirk). I am unsure which is his...or if they may both be his.

I have a lot of information about his wife MariaAntonia Bagarozza and her family (from San Fele, Potenza, Italy) however I am having much difficulty finding anything concrete about Georgio Catalano's family (parents, siblings, etc.).

Send for his social security application, may list additional info.
Check for an obituary which may also hold clues as to parents, and place of birth. Did he attend mass? Church records may also hold vital clues.

Social Security Death Index

Name: George Catalano
SSN: 126-12-2663
Last Residence: 14048 Dunkirk, Chautauqua, New York, United States of America
Born: 20 Aug 1886
Died: Mar 1978
State (Year) SSN issued: New York (Before 1951

I also have to ask, are you sure the manifest you located, a copy of which I posted above, is the correct one? The birthdate is off by two years?

Actually, no I am not 100% sure that is him, but it was so close,
I am assuming. His birth date is different on everything I have...1910 census (1888), 1920 census (1887), 1930 census (1887), Dunkirk WWI Reg. (20 Aug 1887), Buffalo WWI Reg. (--1888), and SS death index (20 Aug 1886). The only info that is 100% correct is the census info...because all of the children match up. Beyond that though, I am just making assumptions.

I searched Francesco and Carmine and found their manifests. Francesco was going to his brother Carmine in Buffalo (March 10, 1904) and Carmine was going to his cousin Guiseppi in Dunkirk, NY (May 27, 1903).

The 1910 census has Carmine, married to Theresa Bagarozza (a sister of Mary Bagarozza who is married to George) living in the vicinity of George and Mary (Maria).

In addition, my husbands family insists that George is from "Calabrese".

Calabrese is a term for someone from Calabria. If George was from San Roberto, Reggio Calabria, he is indeed "Calabrese"

A link to ordering ss application:

SS5 Request

and you can expect the census to be off by one year depending on when the census was taken and when the persons birthmonth was. They could have had a birthday prior to the census or thereafter. Only on the 1900 census was the exact birthdate asked for.

Okay, I have located another Manifest that matches dates for Giorgio Catalano more closely, but states that he is going to a cousin Domenico Catalano in Hazelton, PA (Box 66). There are two other Catalanos on board also traveling to Hazelton (Guiseppi and Carmine).
How can I find out which manifest is actually him???
I searched census records for catalano in Hazelton and found nothing. PA and Dunkirk NY are very close to each otther, but I think that Hazelton in much further south (closer to West Virginia not NY).

If I remember correctly, I did locate the name in Pennsylvania on a previous search. I don't have time right now, just briefly checking in here , but perhaps another member would be willing to join the search.

If nothing has been located, I'll try to get back to this late this evening.

Ahh, that Giorgio cannot be him because in 1913 he was married with 2 children and the 1913 manifest states that both brothers are single. I guess that puts me right back to the 1906 manifest and points to incorrect immigration date on the census records.
I have ordered the SS Aplication. Mayby that will shed some light on this mystery :)

The first manifest is dated 1904.

Also don't base possibilities on just one notation. Is the rest of the info correct? In both manifests, his father is Giuseppi and he is going to Hazelton. He may have made a number of trips back and forth and missed some censuses.

In 1910 (census) he was in Buffalo, NY and in 1917 (WWI Enlistment) he was in Dunkirk, NY.
I could see if he was on the boat in 1904 and decided to go to Buffalo with someone he met on board (there were some going to Buffalo), but I am not sure why he would again, in 1913, list Hazelton, PA as his destination if he lived in NY. All of his 9 children listed in the 1930 census were born in NY.
I think what I need is some census data from Hazelton, PA placing a George Catalano there to compare his family (wife and children). I suppose it may be possible that he was transient looking for work because many of the early records show him as not currently employed. I do know that he worked for the RR, he may have been in Hazelton working... :?
