Re: Cartisano Family
I'm looking in both the US and Italy. I have very limited information regarding Rocco other than when he came to the US with his wife Laura. They settled in Johnstown, PA where they owned a bakery, some real estate, and an interest in the Paramount Coal Mining Co. The had a daughter Carmela, born in Italy (aprox 1895) but I do not see when she arrived in the US. She is our grandmother. They had another daughter Vincenzina, also born in Italy and I have been able to trace her family to present generation. There were sons (Filippo and Giuseppe) but they died as infants or young children so uncertain if they were born in US or Italy. They finally had a son Filippo that survived, he was born (1912) and died (1982) in Pennsylvania.
I am trying to find Rocco's parents and siblings. Any information would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Re: Cartisano Family
We have a local Family History Center and I have ordered some microfilm for birth and marriage records. I am waiting for the films to arrive, delay due to holiday. I thought it would be helpful if I could find some info so I knew what to look for when searching the microfilm. I did find limited 1910 and 1930 Cencus Data, not as much information as provided. Thank you for 1920 info and your quick reply.
Re: Cartisano Family
That's great that you have films on order!
I can see why you're having trouble finding your grandmother's manifest.
If only there were another relative on the census records - we could check and see if the daughters arrived with them.

Interesting that neither of Rocco & Laura’s daughters are on the 1900 manifests
6 Aug 1900 lined-off manifest
12 Aug 1900 manifest

Re: Cartisano Family
This could be daughter Vincenza's manifest based on last residence, destination and father's name although year of birth differs from census records. Poor image on Ancestry, but better than the image on Ellis Island.

I agree, I think listing Rocco as a nephew on the manifest for Marianna Di Agostino is probably an error.
The inquiry page has Marianna Di Agostino as Giov. Gatto's mother & Vincenza Cartisano as his neice.
Marianna Di Agostino is most likely Laura & Giovanni Gatto's mother.
Great catch!

Re: Cartisano Family
I must apologize, I said in an earlier message that I have the information for Carmela's sister Vincenzina, up to present generation. You are correct, Laura's brother, Giovanni brought her daugher Vincenzina to the US along with his wife, mother, and two sons. I think if you look at the actual manifest you will see her age is not 1 but 7; she was born in 1897. Carmela was born 11/23/1895 and married Francesco (Frank) Lofaro in 1920 (Cambria County, PA).
So help me understand the best way to assist you in this search. I wasn't sure if I should provide info or ask questions. I have the immediate Gatto family (Laura's 2 brothers, her sister, and parents) pretty well documented for all the current generations in the US.
The Cartisano's are elusive. This is what was passed down to us from family stories. Rocco's parents were father, Filippo and mother, unknown Remero (something like that). Both families were land owners and their income was from growing and **SPAM** fruit but both had other income. The Cartisano's operated a bakery and the Remero's controlled water rights for quite a large region of southern Italy.

Hello !
You did great!
You asked for help with your grandmother Carmela's manifest.
Sometimes it really helps in a search like this to look at the related documents for the family.
If you have all of your family's manifests, it's going to be tough to noodle out who Carmela travelled with.
What was her immigration year on her 1930 census?
Thank you for the feedback & updates, Valarie

Re: Cartisano Family
Let me tell you what I was looking at as a possible for Carmela's manifest : Arrived Ellis Island 9/5/1901 aboard the Nord America, port of departure was Napoli. I think she's traveling with Mariangela Gatto but I don't recognize that name. Laura only had one sister that I know of and her name was Angelina, aprox dob 1866. Angelina was married to Carlo Nunnari and they resided in Boswell, PA (no children). The Boswell Historic Society is sending me a copy of Angelina's Obituary, I haven't received it yet.
What else can I provide ?
