I'm aware that these boards have many experts on Ellis Island, and I'd like to ask for your help. I was able to find the ship's lists for Ellis Island regarding my great-great grandmother, but I found an inconsistency that I'm hoping you can help me explain.
Salvatora Martino sailed from Naples on the Hesperia on October 26, 1900 with her sons Antonino, Gandolfo, and Felice Panepinto. They were on their way to meet Salvatora's husband and the boys' father, Antonino Panepinto, who had made the journey the previous year with his daughters Vincenza and Calogera, living at that time in Buffalo, NY. When they entered the ship, Salvatota and all three of her sons were listed, then crossed out. Correct me if I'm wrong, but I think this means they were detained for further inquiry. They must have satisfied the inspectors, because they were listed on the manifest for the next ship, the Karamania, on November 8, 1900.
So far, this sounds like a routine situation for being detained, then allowed into the country, except for one problem: Gandolfo was not listed with the others on the second manifest. I'm not able to find the list of persons detained from that voyage, so I'm not able to figure out any details about what happened to him. Could Gandolfo have died on the ship?
