Looking for more Meolas - Paterson NJ and Avellino

Post by jonathanmeola »

Looking for more information on my branch of the Meola clan...

My father was first generation American (Al Meola) from Paterson, NJ USA. His parents were Vincenzo and Vincenza Meola. I believe my grandfather came from Avellino but I don't know from which village or town.

As for my grandmother, her maiden name was Cuono (sp?) and I believe she came from Rome or one of the northern cities. I believe they were married in Italy around the turn of the century.

They had several children, including Louie, John, Dora, Adam, and Alfred (my dad) and lived on River Street in Paterson where they had a grocery store.

Yes, those were my grandparents. My father was born later in 1930 which is why he probably wasn't listed on the census.

I am a member of the Rossi family which married the Meola family. They are all from Paterson, NJ. The Meola's were silk dyers. My great Uncle was Ralph Meola and he worked with his father, Vincenzo Meola. I was told that Vincenzo married Johvanna Capra. Ralph had a daughter named Terri. His sister, Katherine Meola married Peter Rossi and they had three kids Genevieve, Vincenzo, and Costabile Rossi. Do you think this the the same family?

To jenrossi: I am the niece of Vincenzo Antonio Meola (born 1889), grandfather of Jonathan. I think he has not seen your message and I would like to answer it. The father of his great-uncle was Ralph V. James Meola (Vincenzo would too?), Born in 1869, married Johana Capra. (Https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.1/M9NH-FNS). My father told me that his brother Vincenzo was really a dyer and the evidence you described, are actually related, but would need to have the ascendancy of V.James Meola (name of father and mother) to make sure the type of kinship. Were the Vincenzo two cousins or uncle and nephew ? .

There is a Greci, Avellino website that is by far the best Italian website that I have ever seen. All the records from the town were translated to English covering hundreds of years. There are many "Meola" people on it. Here's a link that starts with Meola in alphabetical order. There are three pages just for Meola.
