Hi,
Now that you know the actual surname, your next task is to determine the name of the town in Messina that your ancestor came from. Messina is the name of the province, but it also contains the city of Messina and many other towns. If you can find the ancestor who emigrated on the Ellis Island web site, depending on when they came over, you may find the name of the town shown on the manifest. Do you know the first names of the ancestors who emigrated or when they might have emigrated? If you know when they were born that might help narrow it down. The woman traveled under their maiden name, since in Italy, even today, the maiden name is their legal name. So this is an important piece of information to know when you are searching for the wives on a manifest.

When you locate the town of origin in the province of Messina (which includes the Lipari islands) you then send a form letter requesting the documentse you wish to obtain (free of charge) birth certifcates, marriage and death records are immediately available

Go to www,angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwisdom/italian-form-letter.html for the form letters.

You can go to www.nonsolocap.it and type inthe name of the town and click CERCA and when the town sup click on the name and a website will show up which will give you information about the town and scroll down to MUNICIPIO which is the address to send your request to the Ufficio di Stato Civile

However there may be microfilnm records for the towns BMD's usually from 1810-1900 at your nearest Mormoin family history library which you can rent out if you wish to research your family bvack tothose dates. The microfilm records are handwritten and in Italian and there is a book Discovering Your Italian Ancestors by LynnNelson whichis a companion book for the micorfilms. The rentalis ablut $5.00 and go to www.fa milysearch.org for the nearest family history library to your home. =Peter=

Hi Justin!

Do you have any first names? Members can help search for the manifest, or perhaps there is other documentation that may list the exact town of origin!
