travel to Italy

Post by sleggieri »

We are travelling to Southern Italy in June, and hope to do some genealogy research while there. We've got the info on where the Leggieri, Zangardi and Bubici families were from (Poggio Imperiale, San Marco in Lamis, San Severo) from their immigration records. Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to begin once we get there, or what further groundwork to lay before we go? We have some of the naturalization records too, but not all.

Thanks for any help you can give!

Go to www.nonsolocap.it and put in the name of the town (separately) and click CERCA and up will come the zip code, name of town, province and region and any suburb or attached neighborhoods. You can click on each town name and a web page will come up with map, names and addresses and other Town(comune) information. The address under the MUNICIPIO is where the civil registry and census office is located. Along side is the tourist www with perhaps some pictures but its all in Italian.

For road map between towns and elsewhere go to www.viamichelin.com for driving directions. =Peter=

About one month before you go I would recommend you write to the Mayor telling him what dates you will be in town and that you hope his staff will be available to help you with your research. If you know what documents you hope to find you might list them (with dates or years only). You might also do the same with the parish priest.
When you arrive, go the first day (or 2nd) to the town hall and introduce yourselves and ask what day you should come back. Same with the priest. Bring a copy of your letter. They will probably help you the same day but sometimes there are elections, festa's etc going on.
If you don't speak Italian, try to have your request written out in Italian before you go.
