Are you looking for an Italian surname? Do you need more information about your family heritage?
This is the right place to start your genealogy search.
I am looking for possible links to more information about my grandfather Joseph Bilotta. He came to the US from Calabria in 1902 at age 6. PArents sent him with an aunt to the new world. All I know is he is from Calabria. My father never knew his grandparents so we lost touch with our roots from Italy. Can anyone help me? Ancestory.com has no records except draft card confirming above. Is there a Calabrian City that had many Bilotta's? Is there a web site that can help me with some facts that may lead me to his birthplace? thanks in advance to anyone who an shed some light on this, we are at a lost to the history of our family except to know the little I mentioned above.
Do you have your grandfather's ship's manifest? That might have a lot of clues. Where did he settle? Name of wife/siblings/children? What was the name of the aunt he travelled with?
With l little more info, we can help in the search.
In order to orient yourself you should have a background on Italy genealogy so that you willbe able to ask questions that are meaningful to you based on what you read and know. This will enable us to direct your rersearches in an efficient and orderly manner bringing much enjoyment to yourself.
The aunt's name was Maria Bilotta (we think). My Dad recollects the name and I found a Joseph (no middle initial) and a Maria directly next to him on the Immigration wall on Ellis Island yet they have no records. Weird! ow would this get put on? It is also listed under 19026 which is when he got here so I am pretty sure it is him.
I can not find the ship he was on. I also think if I could I'd get a lot of good info but hitting a dead end on the ship. The Ellis Island thing makes me think he went through New York but all searches at both Ellis Island and the ship registries come up negative.
He married in the US to Elizabeth and had children, Elzabeth, Frank, and Joseph.

Dear JBilotta since you saw the legend of their landing at ellisisland there has to be a record, albeit, informal or indexed somewhere with NARA in NYC I would call them at 212-401-1620 and ask to speak with a clerk in the archives or e-mail them at newyork.archives@nara.gov if the clerk or any person you spoke to cannot help you or won't help you. =Peter=

if this census is correct for your family here is Franco's wife Vittoria Sergio? arrival in 1904, she was travelling with her daughter Marianna (age 3), they were coming from Maida (Catanzaro Province - Calabria region) and joining Francesco Bilotta in Pennsylvania (cant' recognize the place)
and I believe this should be the arrival for Franco's sister in law Vittoria Bilotta, she was joining her husband Michele Bilotta in Chicago, travelling with her daughter Marianna and coming from Maida

In the space of just over a century a number almost equivalent to the amount of the population at the time of the unification of Italy emigrated abroad. It wa...
