Best places to look when someone NOT in census?

Long post- sorry.

I've been able to get really far with all my other lines but I have this one line that is driving me crazy!! These people seem to never show up where they should. It's like a genealogy vaccuum!

I'm looking for Michele D'Angelo and his wife Benigna Cipriani, both borna round 1860 in Pettorano Sul Gizio, L'Aquila.

I have found BOTH of their ship records and know that Michele was living in Hartly, Delaware when his wife came with one of their children in 1915.

Michele came in 1905 but I can't find him in the 1910 census and I don't see either of them in the 1920 census (despite the fact that in 1917-18 on their sons' WW1 draft cards they said they were supporting parents).

That means they were at least still ALIVE around 1917- but they just seem to vanish!!

I had a fellow genealogy geek in De. look up deaths in the years after 1917 and they didn't find their names.

I'm not sure what church they went to either. The records for this family are few and far between. One brother never married and the other later went to Canada then supposedly back to Italy.

What are some other steps I can take to try to find what happened to them?

I'd like to know where they were living after 1915, where and when they died- or anything more than I do now. For now, I just have their ship records- then they disappear!

Yes, the records for Giuseppe are my g-grandfather (Michele's son). I had the ship record with Michele going to see his brother in law in CT but I this is the first I've seen for Giuseppe!

Thank you! I am so excited. I never saw a record for him. I don't know how I missed it.

I'm going to ask my family if they have any idea what that town is in Penn. I can't make it out. Maybe Michele was still in PA in 1910 and that's why I couldn't find him in the census?

Now if I can only find out what happened to the parents after that! Well, you've already given me more info. than I had and now I have some more places I can look. Thanks again!

Dear Lord! No wonder I was going crazy pinning them down. These guys moved around a lot more than I thought. First CT, then PA, Then NY, then DE.....

This definitely looks like it's them. I guess i didn't realize they moved so much. I never heard of a son Mariano before either. As far as I knew, there were only 3 sons: Giuseppe / Joseph (my g-grandpa), Pasquale / Patsy and Morris / Maurizio. Wonder what the heck happened to Mariano then ? Maybe he went back to Italy.

I'll have to start some whole new searches now with this new info.

You definitely did. And now I have a lot of questions in my head. The last one that you posted for them in NY has me really curious now because the woman that my g-grandfather married (Josephine Leggio) was born in NY and lived there around the time that it has the D'Angelo's there.

I have the Leggio side traced back pretty far. And there was a whole group of Italian families that kept migrating together in a pack- from Sicily to NYC then then all settled in De. closeby.

This makes me wonder now if the D'Angelo's didn't already know the Leggio's from NY days? I always thought that the families met in De. but that may not be the case.

Ah, the mysteries... But that's what makes it fun right?

It looks like Lewis Run PA. There's another one a few lines under it. It's in the far north central part of the state.
