I am sure that the remainder of the information will be furnished by others here so I am going to refer you to the website on Italian Genealogy form letters in Italian for birth, marriage and death records as well as family compositon certificates. http://www.angelfire.com/ok3/pearlsofwi ... tters.html

The address to send the form letters can be found by going to www.nonsolocap.it and put in Militello in Val Catania on the top and when the zip code, town name, province intials and region comes up click on the town name and scroll down to Municipio for the address to mail your request(s) to Ufficio di Stato Civile. There will be a www for the town tourist info to the right of the Municipio address. =Peter=

Once you obtain the name of his parents, there is limited microfilm at the following Site.
From this you can obtain all birth, marriage and death as far back as the dates allow.

Hi Michael,

In your other post you're telling that you're searching for the right death place for Giovanna Lardizzone Castrogiovanni (Frank's wife). As you told she died around 1918/1919 maybe this 1920 census should be helpful for you to determine the right place :D just in the case you don't already have it

WOW!!! Thanks Laura; you are such a huge help; i am just beginning this research and finding it most interesting; i am logging it all in ancestry as i go.

There are 2 quick thinks i noticwe from a first read.

For Salvatore: The 1910 census shows a 1910 year of immigration. That i have verified thru ellis island. Then the 1920 census shows a year of immigration of 1904.

Your thoughts...think he went there and back?

Also; do you think it is possible that Salvatore and Frank had a brother Vincenza; i noticed his name in the 1910 census; and the ages are similiar.

Thanks VERY much; i will be in touch!

Michael :D I'm glad I was able to help you!

Regarding Salvatore, from http://stevemorse.org/ellis2/ellisgold.html
here is his first (and I believe only) arrival in the U.S. on 1907:

Salvatore Castrogiovanni, married, age 34 (aprox. year of birth 1873) last residence Militello, joining his friend Salvatore Zaffarano living on 60 Catherine Street NY

http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0017

his wife Vincenza D'Amico age 33 (last residence in Italy Militello, where she was leaving his father Giovanni D'Amico) and his daughter Giuseppa joined him on February 1909:

page 1:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0015

page 2:
http://www.ellisisland.org/EIFile/popup ... &line=0015

Don't worry about the differences between the statements on the censuses manifests... It was pretty normal, very often the immigrants did "cheat" on their ages... usually making them younger  ...
They had to declare without proof of what they were stating, so declarations were based on their memories...

This is another very helpful site for vital records in NY:

http://www.italiangen.org/vitalreclist.stm

from this site these are the marriage dates for Salvatore's daughter Giuseppina/Josephine:

Castrogiovanni Giuseppina Apr 8 1913 Certificate Number: 845 Manhattan

groom was:

Nigido Mario Apr 8 1913 Manhattan certificate number: 8845

I checked the database:
Vital Records:
New York City Death Index 1891-1948

with no luck finding Giovanna's death date... sure her lastname was mispelled... :?

Laura; Thank you SO much!!! This really is great stuff...my biggest hope is to find my Grandmother Giovanna; what a tough loss that must have been for them to lose her so young. Other names that i believe that she might have gove by are...

Giovanna Lardizzone
Josephine Lardizzone
Genevieve Lorrisone
Josephine Castrogiovanni
Jennie Lorrisone

Would you possibly have the chance to run these names against
the Vital Records:

Thanks again very much!!!

Hi Laura; I think your right on with this data. Many Many Thanks!!!

I tried searching for my Great Grandmother Josephine Castrogiovanni (Frank's Wife) on the Italiangen.org link that you priovided; with no luck; kind of disappointing :(

I did go ahead and request a death certificate from NYC. Thanks for that idea.

I tried to research all of the data that i could find on her...this is what i know:

Josephine was believed to have died from the 1918-1919 Flu Epidemic. Her last know address was 142 Cherry Street, Manhattan, NY. Another prior address of hers was 5 Monroe Street, Manhattan, NY. Her surname is Josephine Lardizzone. Other possible variations of her first name are: Giovanna, Genevieve or Jennie. She was born in Militello, Catania, Sicilia, Italy in the year 1881. She immigrated thru Ellis Island on April 10, 1911. If possible, I am also in need of her cemetery location.

Do you think that there is anything else that i missed; I would like to think that its possible to figure out this puzzle.

Any more findings or leads for me to follow is greatly appreciated!

Thanks

Hi Michael,

I also have been doing research on my grandparents & great grandparents & came across some information that might be of interest to you & your research. We might even be related!

My grandmother is Josephine (Giuseppina) Castrogiovanni, spelling slightly different from your last name

Her parents are Salvatore & Salvatrice Castrogiovanni.

Salvatrice's maiden name was D'Amico

Salvatrice's mother was Maria Riccioli D'Amico. I have a photo of her, which I believe she is over 100 years old in the photo, I believe the photo was taken in the 1860's.

Salvatrice D'Amico Castrogiovanni was born in Catania, Sicily - I have a photo of her.

She died at home at the age of 99 in her sleep in New York

She died on June 12, 1963 & is buried at the Interment Calvary Cemetery, Section 53, Plot 83, Grave 9-10

I obtained this information from the back of the funeral card my mother had in her possession.

Salvatore Castrogiovanni - I also have a photo of him.

He died on June 28, 1940, at the age of 68.

I obtained this info from the back of the funeral card my mother had in her possession as well.

Salvatore & Salvatrice Castrogiovanni had a daughter - Josephine (Giuseppina) - we always celebrated her birthday on October 23.

She was born in 1898 in Catania, Sicily.

I located a copy of her Social Security Application dated 12/14/1936, which states her birthday to be 4/11/1898.

I think my grandmother, Josephine (Giuseppina) Castrogiovanni came to America thru Ellis Island at the age of 5, although I cannot locate any records for her.

If that is true, the year would have been 1903.

She attended public school PS177 up to the 8th grade.

She lived with her parents & her 2 cousins.

Salvatore & Salvatrice were also raising Salvatore's brothers 2 children, Angelo & Jennie after Salvatore's brother wife passed away.

Josephine (Giuseppina) Castrogiovanni married my grandfather, Mario Nigido on April 8, 1913

They were married in the US.

I have their wedding photo, 25th Anniversary picture & their 50th wedding anniversary picture

They lived at 148 Cherry Street in the borough of Manhattan, New York.

They had 3 children, Salvatrice or Sally or Sadie, Gaetano or Thomas or Tom & Salvatore - who is my father.

I have photos of all of them

They moved from 148 Cherry Street to Market Street, then onto 2069 West 13th Street in Bensonhurst, New York

My grandmother, passed away on May 25, 1998, just 5 months shy of her 100th birthday.

She passed away in Belcamp, Maryland but is buried in Hollywood, Florida next to her husband.

I also have info on my grandfather, Mario Nigido & photos as well. He was from Militello, Sicily

His parents are Gaetano & Salvatrice Nigido. Salvatrice's maiden name was Virenda.

He arrived at Ellis Island on May 23, 1910 aboard the San Giovanni.

I have 2 different address' where he resided upon his arrival, 5 Monroe St. & 60 Catherine Street.

I have other info as well.

I hope some of this helps your search. I would be happy to share any photos you might be interested in seeing.

Sincerely,

Denise Fiamingo

Hi:

My great grandpa was Salvatore Zafferano (Zaffarano) and he was born in Militello, Sicily. He arrived at Ellis Island on 1906. In 1924 Salvatore worked at the Sunshine Biscuit Company. In 1925 he acquired a candy store. I have little information regarding the Italy side and the settlement in Militello, Sicily.

Parents: Giuseppe Zafferana and Giacoma Passlaqua

Married: Vicenza Leone Nov 27 1910 - she died June 20 1933

Salvatore died July 20, 1946 in Sacramento, CA

Sons: Joseph, Paul & George
Daughters: 3 girls that were names Jane that died at a young age.

I am looking for any information regarding Salvatore's and Vicenza's family.
