Contini, DiChiaro, Mazziotta, Durso, Palumbo Surnames

Post by dcontini »

I am looking for descendants of Antonette Contini (DiChiaro) wife of Santos or Sandiel DiChiaro who would have immigrated to the Freeland (Luzerne County) area of PA in the late 1800's from Castelluccio Valmaggiore (Foggia, Italy). Her descendants would include the Mazziotta, and Durso surnames.

I am also looking for information pertaining to the descendants of who I believe to be her sister, a Mary (Mary Contini) Palumbo born around 1868. Died somewhere between 1937 and 1944, also immigrating to Luzerne County area in the late 1800's.

Both are probably buried in a "St Anthony's" Catholic Cemetery.

Both are children of Pasquale and Concetta (Altieri) Contini. Other brothers and sisters include John (twin) and Rocco who also immigrated to Luzerne county area as well as Pietroangelo (my great-grandfather), Donato, Joseph, Michael, and Lawrence (twin) who immigrated to Canal Dover, Ohio.

Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Hello and Welcome to the Forum :D !
Checked for possible research on ancestry. com and found several family sites but only one attached record, the 1920 census. Are any of the family sites yours? And, do you have all of your US records? There may be clues in these records to help locate possible descendants.
Thank you! Valarie

Thank you so much for the information. You have been extremely helpful. I did not have a copy of this record. I have posted on the message boards on ancestry.com, but am unfamiliar with the family sites.

Thanks again.

Re: Contini, DiChiaro, Mazziotta, Durso, Palumbo Surnames

Post by dcontini »

Thanks so much for all the information pertaining to the Antonette Contini and Santo DeChiaro line. You have given me much added information.

I have had continuous contact with a cousin Jane Anderson who posted the ancestry family inormation that you supplied regarding the children of Pasquale and Concetta (Altieri) Contini. She posted the 8 that she has discovered. Several older Contini relatives of mine claim that there were 12 original children. An old obituary for my great great uncle Joseph Contini who died in 1937 says that there was also a sister Mary who settled in the Freeland PA area along with Antonette, Rocco and John. I somehow came up with the married name of Palumbo (but could be wrong here). When my great-grandfather died in 1944, she was no longer listed on his obit as a surviving sibling. There are 3 remaining siblings of the origianal 12 that I can not account for (they may have never left Italy).

Is it possible to obtain from Italy (Castelluccio Valmaggiore in the province of Foggia) information pertaining to the births of these 12 original children of Pasquale and Concetta (Altieri) Contini. I have a marraige date of Oct 7, 1858. Concetta died Apr 11, 1877, and I think Pasquale went on to remarry around 1878 a Filomena Mainieri. I was told they had another set of 12 children. I know of one (Concetta: born Oct 14, 1879).

Thank you so much for all your help.

I apologize that I am a bit of a distance from the information you are trying to find, however, this is the closest, thus far, to my family tree I have been able to find. I am a descendant of Joseph (a brother to your great-grandfather, dcontini) who moved to Dover, Ohio (where I still live). I'm actually leaving to go to our public library to see what I can find on the names you've listed, but as for my direct tree, it's like it doesn't exist. I will be sure to post what I can find, but do you have you been able to find any information on Joseph?

I've only been able to find him on ancestry, so I do have that.

Are you speaking of Joseph (brother to Pietroangelo)? I have much information on this line. Joseph and Emanuella Goduti (Goduta) had 4 children. Donata (Contini) Polce, Casper Contini, Rocco Contini and Concetta Contini (Zifer). Concetta (whom I remember as Aunt "Coonchie" (sp?) is actually a double cousin of my father's (both the Contini and Zifer side).

From which of Joseph's children are you a descendant? I would be happy to share all information with you. I have passsenger records and arrival dates from Foggia. I have obituaries for most of these, I have John and Donata Polce's and I believe Rocco's marraige license from St Joseph's, and obituaries on all. I have a picture of the whole clan taken on my grandfather (Joseph C. Contini) and grandmother (Theresa Zifer's) wedding day in 1916 on Broad Street in Dover and much more...

I grew up in Dover (Tuscarawas Ave) and live in New Philadelphia now.

Can you contact me at dcontini@roadrunner.com

I was looking to clarify some info regarding the children of Donata Contini Polce (several whom died in early childhood).

I have also been trying to find more info on the brothers and sisters that settled in PA.

Hope to hear from you again soon!

Valarie,

Thanks again for all of your help. You asked if I may need any other US records for Continis. Are you able to locate a death cert or any other records for a Mary Palumbo (maiden name Contini) born approximately 1868 who would have died (I believe) somewhere between 1937 and 1944. Probably in Luzerne County (Freeland, PA). Most likely buried in St. Anthony's cemetery there. Parents names Pasquale and Concetta (Altieri) Contini.

Thanks again for any help you may be able to provide.
