Re: MT Eve

MarcuccioV: Have you uploaded your DNA to GEMATCH or Admixturestudio and run some of those calculators to see what could be a way to capture source ancestry. Could be at the autosomal level, your going to cluster with Central Italian populations (I suspect that is the case) while your Mtdna is U3ba2 ...

MarcuccioV: Could have gotten there during the Roman Imperial Period. At that time Armenia and what is now Turkey would have been part of the Roman empire. Alternatively, perhaps some of your ancestors where Eastern Catholics who fled the Ottomans and came into Italy say in the early 14th century ...

Re: Percent Italian for Sicilians

My recent Ancestry is 65% Southern Italian and 5% Northern Italian. I get 24% Greek-Albanian and 2% Greek-Agean. 2% Levant and 1% Northern Europe (Irish, I think it is really a Norman signal) and 1% North African.

There are lots of DNA studies on Italian genetics. All Italian regions harbor ...

Re: MT Eve

BTW, U3b2 is primarily Sicilian (it's also found in Hungary, Turkey & the Levant). So the one German match most likely has either a Hungarian or Sicilian in the maternal woodpile...

It also likely has ancient origins with the Romani of northern Asia (India)...

Correct, and U3b2a is found in ...

kdub: All of the Baptisms in the River Parishes between Baton Rouge and New Orleans such as Ascension parish, Assumption and Iberville are now in the Catholic Diocese of Baton Rouge. So if some of those folks worked in the Sugar Mills in those areas and were Baptized in one of those 3 Civil Parishes ...

Yes, NAT GENO was what I used and I am I-M223. All ancestors immigrated from Sicily between 1890 and 1903. My top 2 Match Populations at NAT GENO are 1) Italian (they use Italians from Tuscany/Central Italy as reference population) and 2) Greek.

Re: Trying to wrap my mind around my Italian heritage

I am a third generation Italian-American since all my great-grandparents on both sides were born in Italy, and my Ancestry.com DNA results are very clear:

76% Southern Italy (Calabria, Campania, Basilicata)
24% Turkey and the Caucasus

That's it! Apparently my ancestors are all from a pretty ...

Re: Alia, Palermo, Sicily Families

I live in Baton Rouge, and my Great grandparents, and 1 Grandparent immigrated from Sicily to New Orleans between 1890-1903. Just like others have noted in this thread, my ancestors worked in the Sugar Mills in Saint John the Baptist parish and Ascension Parish (River parishes) and then spread up ...

A recent paper by Raveane et al (2019) documents the source populations of modern Italians. All Italians are primarily related to the Neolithic Early European Farmers from Anatolia, ranges from 56 to 72%. The link to the paper is below as it is an open access academic journal. Figure 2 ...

Hello all and Buon Natale:

My ancestors all immigrated to the USA (New Orleans) from rural/insular Trapani, Palermo (Palazzo Adriano) and Agrigento (Cammarrata). My paternal Great Grandfather was born in Salaparuta, Trapani. Most on this forum are probably aware that Salaparuta, as other towns in ...

I would recommend you find the recent empirical scholarship on Italian DNA studies. There are lots of trolls out there that like to play the otherness of Southerners (Campania, Puglia, Calabria, Basilicata and Sicily). I would recommend two recent DNA studies
