Figlio Pupillo?

Post by cdemarco »

So I finally found the death record for my 6x great-grandfather, Saverio Reale, but noticed something weird. Usually this type of record gives the name of the deceased, their parents' names, and the name of their spouse if married/widowed. But for Saverio, after his wife, it adds another person, Pasquale, who is apparently Saverio's 'figlio pupillo'. I can't find a proper translation other than 'pupil son', but it seems to me to be something akin to an apprentice? (from the index it looks like Saverio was a dyer of cloth). Has anyone else come across this term?

Also, I'm kinda assuming the age after Pasquale's name refers to Saverio and not Pasquale, as it seems more likely?

Pasquale is his son/ward and age 15. pupillo = ward

Saverio is age 75.

Whoops, I didn't see the age down there! I think I spent too much time researching the Swedish side of the family, I started to forget my Italian!

And thanks for the help, I appreciate it!

the Pupillo is a protege, a person of minor age, in this case the son who inherits from the deceased, and whose legacy is administered by the tutor (in this case I think he was the father) until the protege reaches the adult age and can provide by itself of its inheritance

So I can probably assume that Pasquale was basically his father's dyer apprentice and probably inherited his dyer business?

Pasquale was son of Saverio. Pasquale was the protege, of minor age. Pasquale inherited the business, but having minor age, Pasquale will have a tutor, of adult age, until he (Pasquale) will have adult age.

Gotcha. Makes sense, and interesting that it's recorded in the death record. Thanks!
