Marriage No 2: Ignazio Modugno and Angela Antonia Introna

Molfetta: 6 January 1813

Appearing before the official were:

Groom: Ignazio Modugno, 22 yo, Calzolaio (shoemaker/cobbler), living in Molfetto, Strada San Stefano, adult son of Vincenzo Modugno, 60 yo, Muratore (bricklayer/mason) and of Marta de Gennaro, 60 yo, Filatrice, both living in this town, in Strada San Stefano, who were both present to give their respective consent.

Bride: Angel’Antonia Introna, 16 yo, filatrice (spinner), living in this town in Strada San Vito, No 1, minor (had not reached the age of maturity) daughter of Cosmo Introna, 50 yo contadino, and of Anna Maria de Russo, 50 yo filatrice, both living here, in Strada San Vito, present at the Act to give their respective consent.

Banns were posted on the door of the Town Hall, the first on Sunday, 13 December (1812), at 4 pm, the second on 20 December 1812 at 4 pm, resulting in no opposition to the marriage taking place.

Hello G

So why does it translate to "eldest" son in this record? We have always translated "figlio maggiore" to mean "who has reached the age of maturity" ? e.g. https://www.italiangenealogy.com/forum/ ... re#p260585

I'm interested to know what the difference is. I know that google translates "figlio maggiore" to be "eldest son" but it often gets things wrong.

Edit to Add: I wrote "adult son" because I thought it meant the same thing as "reached the age of maturity".

Thank you. I understand. I should've rechecked his age this morning when I read your post. For some reason I remembered his age being 26 not 22. (Juggling too many records at the moment.) I'll see what I can find out about the age of maturity in Puglia in that time frame.

Kind regards

Angela
