I had nothing up until a few days ago.... the name change was around 1920 so no WWI draft registration that I could find, I know part of the family stayed in New Orleans, some went to Chicago, and Los Angeles. I plan on visiting Sicily for the first time in October, hopefully there are some family members there.

But for now..must sleep now. Too much celebrating. I guess!

I'm going to link the manifest that Suzanne is referring to. It does appear to be a first trip..I think we need to see it and I'm sorry if already been posted.

This could be Benedetto..age slightly off but mentions 3 sisters and parents..and matches info from 1910 census ages.

World War I Draft Registration Cards, 1917-1918 Record

Name: Bennett Anthony Piro

Birth Date: 1 May 1894
Race: Caucasian
Roll: 1685022

This could be Francesco...The actual image isn't clear but it could mean born in 1890..not 1880..he would be about 27 and most probably married and that why Benny is in charge of the family. Also, lists himself as a grocer which is his Dad's profession in the 1910 Census below.

1910 Census seems to match up..

Vicent Piro 48
Angela Piro 47
Francisco Piro 18
Benaisto Piro 15
Maria Piro 13
Lucy Piro 10
Camella Piro 7

Year of Immigration...not unusual to be off depending on who gave the info. Remember, the parents couldn't read or write so chances are their English wa off a bit too. Or the census taker may have written Benny's YOB in error..anything. The 1910 census records were always off...in my opinion.

Angela died in 1911....so that would explain why she disappears after the 1910 census. Would also confirm Benny being in charge of the farm and father with 3 sisters over 12...I'm sure thats him.

Looks like Maria married Antonio Musso on July 3, 1917 and moved to Chicago where they had a son..August (as per the 1920 census).

Lucia married Bertrand Joseph Breaux on Aug 18, 1919..not sure where they are yet.

Benedetto may have changed his name to Bennett and followed to Chicago with his wife...Edna and son Vincent.

And Francesco became John, wife Francis and Carmella (Camille) with her father Vincent moved in with them. They were still in LA in 1920 but moved to California by 1930.

Oops...I think they may have reversed the husband and wife...Francis could be Francesco and John could Gioconda (I can't remember Franceso's nearest relatives name on the WW1 cards.Gioacchina Lo Pressti..(?) Unless...could John be another son that arrived later? This is the census that is the most confusing...need to study it.... :? :? :? :? :?

Looks like the same family to me..John is still a grocer..and Lucia and family live next door...I think the family just lied a lot about their ages and personal info.

Vincenzo 1903 Manifest

Hi Nuccia,

Thanks for checking on this.

This 1903 manifest is really confusing me......appears that the same family is on manifests for 1894? & 1897 (sure of) & 3 children b. in LA (census info & LA Birth Index) = 1903 trip can't be 1st trip.

Are we missing a family on census records?........1st - Vincenzo Piro married to Angelina Tuminello (sp) & family and 2nd - Vincenzo Piro married to Angela Tuminello (sp)? & family? Children names & birth years same????

I agree... according to this manifest... it mentions that this is their first trip (but you never know....)

I agree ... they were off to join cousin Filippo Sassano?? More opinions??

Please note the other passenger on line 5.... another Piro? More opinions needed... Gaetano would be joining brother Pasquale

So........ it appears that all the records posted are for the Vincenzo Piro family that came 1897 (see below & page 1) and not the Vincenzo Piro family that made their 1st trip in 1903

New Orleans Passenger Lists, 1820-1945 Record

Name: Vincenzo Piro
Arrival Date: 30 Oct 1897
Age: 36
Gender: Male
Port of Departure: Leghorn and Palermo, Italy
Ship Name: Montebello
Port of Arrival: New Orleans, Louisiana
Last Residence: Moure??ll
National Archives' Series Number: M259_85

http://img161.imageshack.us/img161/4042 ... estbr1.jpg

NOTE: Names & birth years are same for 1897 manifest & 1903 manifest.

>>>>>>>>>>>>>>

CONCLUSION: Where is the Vincenzo Piro family that came in 1903? Or....What am I missing here??? :? :? :?

Shouldn't this be a female, Frances or Francesca?

They look like the same family to me...

So they fibbed a bit... (on the 1903 manifest... )

Looks like they travelled in 1897... and must have gone back to Italy and returned in 1903 (I put the manifest link in my last post...)

I need to read everything everyone posted... what a wealth of info from everyone... what a great team here...

But where's the 1894 manifest.. ??? Has anyone actually seen it ... or is this info based on census info...

Maria

Please note that American citizens are listed on separate manifests..

No they are not the same family, my grandfather had three sisters!, he was the only son, his father Vincenzo stayed in New Orleans, he went to Chicago and then to Los Angeles under a different name in 1921. Thank you all for all your hard work, it has confused the heck out of me and all the men in my family who might know anything are all dead.
