Why would just one child not be given a family name?

As a nation state, Italy has emerged only in 1871. Until then the country was politically divided into a large number of independant cities, provinces and islands. The currently available evidences point out to a dominant Etruscan, Greek and Roman cultural influence on today's Italians.

Why would just one child not be given a family name?

Post by lyn1982 »

My great grandparents had 7 children and my grandmother is the only name not found in my great grandfathers adoptive family. My grandmother was born in 1924 in the USA. She had 2 older siblings. 1 named Maria, which could be for either my ggf's adoptive mother, or my ggm's mother, the other named Dominico, which could be after my great grandfather's adoptive mothers late husband. My grandmother had 4 younger siblings named Joseph (Either after my ggf or after my ggm's father), Louise, Rose, and Virginia. All those last 3 names are also names that my ggf's adoptive brother named his kids. I'm assuming on the adoptive thing btw, based on the names and that my ggf was heading to this brother in his manifest.

My grandmother was born in 1924 in the USA and given the name Angeline. Which appears to be a very rare name, with only 822 babies being given that name that year. It does not appear in my ggm's family either.

Or maybe - is Adalina a form of Angeline? Cause that name does appear in my ggf's tree.

I'm just curious as to why she would be named differently. Especially since I feel something is very off in my DNA matching to my cousins - if it could mean something.
