Where to find birth records in Messina?

Post by peterc »

Hi,

My Great Grandmother, Petrina Cicco, was born in or around Messina on 9 June 1889 to Vincent/Vincenzo Cicco and Angelena Beliano, and emigrated to New York City when she was a child. She married my Great Grandfather, Luigi Cotroneo (born 6 Oct 1886 in Campo di Calabria), in Manhattan in 1908. I was able to find a scan of Luigi's birth certificate in an online archive in Calabria, but I'm struggling to find Petrina's.

Can someone please point me to an archive(s) in Messina?

Kind regards,

Pete

Expanding on what adelfio found, here's the FamilySearch version:
https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:24CW-3Z2

Name /Ramace
Gender Male

Name Luigi Cotronlo
Event Type Marriage
Event Date 16 Oct 1908
Event Place Manhattan, New York, New York, United States
Gender Male
Age 21
Marital Status Single
Race White
Birth Year (Estimated) 1887
Birthplace Italy
Father's Name Antonio
Mother's Name Guiseppa Di Giatiano
Spouse's Name Petrina Ricco
Spouse's Gender Female
Spouse's Age 19
Spouse's Marital Status Widowed
Spouse's Race White
Spouse's Birth Year (Estimated) 1889
Spouse's Birthplace Italy
Spouse's Father's Name Vincenzo

This begs the question as to where the "Ramace" name comes from. First husband?

For competeness, here are the 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses...
1910: lines 35-37 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=1727033
1920: lines 71-76 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=1488411
1930: lines 89-97 - https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1 ... cc=1488411

There are several inconsistencies, but I believe this is the same family.

Very nice work, suanj. Looks like the first marriage was the necessary key to find the path to this family!

in fact there were 2 Keys who helped me to find her arrival firstly, Birth record and marriage record:

1- 1910 census: the surname of her Brother " Riga" spelled.
2- the Death record of her first daughter, and her maiden name is spelled: Enrico

that inspired me: Errigo...

adelfio, VotM, suanj:

I'm overwhelmed by your generosity and detective work. You have found my Great Grandmother. She was indeed married before she met my Great Grandfather, and this, I understand, was something that 'wasn't talked about back then'. The child she lost, Rosa, was certainly kept secret. Amazing how these secrets have led to finding her birth record and true name.

By the way, Petrina (Pietronilla) worked at the Triangle Shirtwaist Factory in Manhattan. On the 25th of March in 1911 she decided not to come into work (don't know why), and she missed the horrific fire that killed 146 immigrant garment workers, many of whom were her friends.

Thank you so much for your assistance. I can only hope that I can do the same for someone else.

Kind regards,

Peter

Hi Peter, I found your Pietrina/Petronilla and I am happy helped you;
when you search, the solution is not of itself.. and very often you have to enlarge the search to reach the goal..

This way to search is to help when conventional methods do not lead to any result, and especially when the name is a bit off....
best regards,

Just to complete the puzzle, I wonder if the "Carmela" (female, age 7?) listed on line 3 is actually her brother, Antonino Carmelo Errigo (a.k.a. "Tony Riga", age 19, on the 1910 census)?
birth record #114: http://www.antenati.san.beniculturali.i ... 7.jpg.html

If so, it wouldn't be the first time the wrong sex was set down for a child passenger.
