Bartolones of Sicily

Post by jc4490 »

I am at a complete dead end here folks. I haven't been able to find anything about this person. When I had an Ancestry account, I found his arrival record and ship passenger list, but it was years ago and I never saved it. The person is:

Philip/Filip/Filipo Bartolone
b. 3or25 Mar 1889 in Sicily
d. 5 Aug 1972 in MI

I believe he arrived around 1915. He came with his future wife Josephine Riccabono (they were married in 1917) and as far as I know they went straight to Detroit. I do not have his parent's names, or legitimate proof of any siblings. I remember reading a newspaper clipping in my grandfather's stuff that mentioned a Camilla Bartolone in NY, and I think it mentioned her being Philip's sister. Also, he came over to America with a Sam (probably Saverio) Bartolone, so I assume that was his brother. I do not know what town in Sicily they came from, though.

Thanks in advance for any help.

Chris' 1930 census find shows a niece Rose Cali, born in Illinois, living with Filippo and family.

Oh my goodness! So many replies. Haha.

Chris, I am pretty sure that everything there is right. But I will have to make sure about Josephine. I was under the impression they came over together. Hmm...

Biff, I can barely read all that writing right in there by his occupation, and I have no idea what those numbers mean or what to do with them. Help? And thank you for all that info, I had known about the Calis but wasn't focusing on them at this time. However I had no idea about Sam, knowing about him and Philip's dad is very exciting!

suanj, thank you. My aunt just mentioned to me yesterday that there were Bartolones in Benton Harbor, and here you come with that information. Awesome!

I have to say that, so far, I am very impressed with this forum and how helpful you all have been. I will definitely recommend this to my family members who are also researching. Thanks again.

pink, thank you as well. I mentioned Rosalia to my mother and she remembered hearing about it when she was younger.

suanj, could Sam's mother's name (Magguire) be a corruption of Montemiggiore? Philip, Sam, and Carmela's first daughters were all named Rosalia, so I'm assuming that that was their mother... Correct me if I'm wrong?

Edit: I meant that maybe Sam or someone made a mistake on that question. But now that I'm thinking about it, Rosalia would be Carmelo's mother's name most likely. But still, Magguire? Hmmm...

Well, thanks to everyone's help, I am making some progress. I searched the LDS site for Carmelo Bartolone, and found one b. 29 Oct 1852 in Bagheria that is very likely the father of Filippo, Carmela, and Sam. Carmelo's parents are listed as Filippo Bartolone and Carmela Blando, haha. I am so happy. Every new person and generation gives me that much more contentment.
