Domenico Feminella - Searching for info

Post by Jim2814 »

My grandfather, Domenico Feminella came to the US in 1883 from Italy. I don't know his home town. He came before Ellis Island opened and I have not found his name under Castle Garden, NYC either. He lived in Elizabeth, New Jersey until his death in 1943.

He married Rosa in 1891 according to the 1910 US census.

I would appreciate any assistance.

I am curious - looking at the 1910 census, what is the place of birth for Domenico and Rosa?

The 1900 census indicates just "Italy".

Here is a possible manifest...

The name is listed as Cono Femminella, but when you look at the manifest many of the first names are abbreviated, and what was transcribed as Cono, looks like it could be Dom.

This is a list for the SS Furst Bismark, arriving NY, Nov. 18, 1895. Not much info on the document other than his age, 26, peasant, and Italy.

He's on line 404...take a look.

Thanks Tessa for your post. However, in the 1900 census he indicated that he emmigrated in 1882 and in 1910 census he indicated it was 1883. So I believe it must have been around that time.

I have searched Ellis Island and Ancestry and can't find anything before 1900. If he did come in 1882 or 1883, then I should be able to find him in the 1890 census, but not yet. I have learned that often names were misspelled which is probably the case here. Thanks!

Except for Jersey City in Hudson county, all 1890 US census records for New Jersey were lost in a fire in 1921.

New Jersey, however, did a state census in 1895 which is available on ancestry but I have not been able to locate the family nor have I been able to locate any possible ship manifests. I found it curious that Domenico was listed as Thomas on the 1930 census. That raises a question about his first name--Domenico, Tommaso, Gaetano are all possbilities.

Going with Biff's idea that the name might be Tommaso...what do you all think of this possibility?

Found a manifest for 1884, for "Commans Farinella". The image quality for the manifest is very poor, but I'm sure the name actually reads "Tommaso." His age is 18, laborer, from Italy. (That would make birthdate about 1866.)

The ship is the SS. Archimede departing from Palermo, Naples and Gibraltar, to New York. Tommaso is on line 207.

Did anyone check the www. castlegarden.org website for pre-1892 arrivals at NYC or did I err? =Peter=

Hi Peter!
Yes, without success
Often the Castle Garden site does a much better job of transcribing than Ellis & ancestry. com.
I think Tessa's latest manifest looks promising.
