Troina/Enna/Sicily: Merenda, Pappalardo, Giuffrida, Grasso
Troina/Enna/Sicily: Merenda, Pappalardo, Giuffrida, Grasso
I'm researching a number of families that emigrated from Troina, Enna, Sicily between 1895 and 1925.
The families are Merenda, Pappalardo, Giuffrida, Grasso, Sutera, Buoncampagno.
I have notes/information on about half of the individuals (of the ones I'm related to - obviously). I'd be glad to share the information that I have.
If anyone is researching along parallel lines, please contact me and we can exchange information

Hi I'm new to this board
I have a small amount of info on the Grasso's that I am related to.
I don't have dates as of yet, but I know that my great-grandfather came from Sicily went to America via Argentina. His name was Guissepe Antonio (Joseph Anthony) Grasso. They settled in Northern NJ, my grandfather was Anthony Joseph Grasso.

Re: Troina/Enna/Sicily: Merenda, Pappalardo, Giuffrida, Gras
My GGrandfather married Maria or Mary Lavorsi they had two sons, my Grandfather, Anthony Joseph Grasso and Francis or Frank Grasso. Eventually settled in northen NJ.
Anthony (Tony) Grasso married Frances Costaglia.
They had two children, Joseph Anthony (my father) and
Josephine.
There was also some Grassos that settled in Argentina, the Beunas Aires area. I have a letter written in Italian that I haven't been able to traslate yet, it refrences Buenos Aires several times and is dated 1927.
I am still trying find out dates for marriages and births.

I'm sorry that my response comes so long after your last post, but if it's of interest to you, my grandmother Lucy (originally Lucia, I believe) Merenda was born July 16, 1902 in Troina. She emigrated after WWI with her mother and sister Anna (don't know if anyone else) to California.
I'd be interested in any info you have on the Merendas.
Grazie tante,
Steven

Steven,
I'll take an educated guess that we're connected.
I think that the names are Lucia Merenda Renna (my father's cousin), Ann Renna Varni (my second cousin), and you, your 2 brothers and 2 sisters (my 3 daughters' third cousins).
I believe that Lucia travel to California with her mother Domenica, her sister Gaetana (Anna), and her brother Vincenzo (Jim) from Troina.
I'm gathering family details and I'd be glad to share what I have thus far. I'm also looking for contributors - if you are so inclined.
Frank.

Frank,
That's really impressive, you're correct right down the line--and know more about my great-aunt and great-uncle than I do, in knowing their given names.
I'd love to see what you have so far on these families (the name Pappalardo also sounds familiar) and would be willing to contribute whatever I can.

I have some information on Giuffrida's as it is my mothers maiden name. Most of them came from Messina and Cantana and came to New York, Mass and Philly
Re: Troina/Enna/Sicily: Merenda, Pappalardo, Giuffrida, Gras
louangelo,
There could be some connection with the Giuffridas - but Giuffrida is a very common Sicilian name.
My relatives with that surname originated in western Catania / eastern Enna province. Let me know if this makes any sense with your family; I can provide you with notes on the topic.

I am actually in Taromina right now checking out Gesso and Calvaruso in Messina, No plans to search for Giuffridas while I am here but I do believe that my Giuffrida family is from somewhere in Catania.
