Family Heritage

Post by jtavano »

I am looking fo rinformation about my grandfather who came to US in 1901 and settled in Boston, MA. He was born in Naples, September 15, 1888. His name was Guiseppi Tavano. I would like to know the exact part of Naples in which he was born and the names of his parents so I can find more about the family origins.

Thank you.

Welcome to the forum :D

Here is an immigration record for Giuseppe Tavano:

Name: Giuseppe Cavano
[Giuseppe Tavano]
Arrival Date: 14 Mar 1911
Age: 23 Years
Estimated birth year: abt 1888
Gender: Male
Ethnic Background: Italian (South) (Italian)
Port of Departure: Naples, Italy
Ship Name: Romanic
Port of Arrival: Boston, Massachusetts
Friend's Name: Lucy Derosa
Last Residence: Italy
Birthplace: Panni, Italy
Microfilm Roll Number: 160

Image page 2:

This says his place of birth is Panni, which is in Puglia (Apulia) region of Italy.

The year of immigration doesn't fit with what you have, but this man was in the America before, from 1901-1904. I believe this to be the man you are looking for, as it was common for men to go back and fourth between Italy and the States.
My Italian surnames:

Caserta: Maietta, Rossano, Tessitore, Negro, Peluso, Musone

Campobasso: D'Andrea, Barile

Catanzaro: Fiorelli/Fiorillo, Romito

Thank you for your post, but I am not convinced that that information is my grandfather. The birthplace is wrong and why Cavano?

Hmm, that does look a bit like Cavano. Ancestry.com gets things wrong a lot, so when I see a correction (like this one that says Tavano) I sometimes assume it is correct without looking. This man's wife's name was Carmella, does that match?

No, re Carmella. His wife was Rose. Or is Carmella the last name?

I believe his wife's name is Carmella DeRosa, as he is listed as going to see his brother in law Luigi DeRosa.

I'm glad you found what you were looking for. :D
Sorry for bogging your question down with the wrong manifest.

Just thought I'd add this census for the Sottile family. It has Stella listed as Simone (Simon's) wife, but this seems to be the right family, as Rose is listed as his daughter, with a the same birth year as the marriage record. Stella must be a stepmother, as they are listed as only being married 11 years, and Rose is 15. Anyway here it is:

Name: Simon Sottile
Age in 1910: 49
[47]
Estimated birth year: abt 1861
[abt 1863]
Birthplace: Italy
Relation to Head of House: Head
Father's Birth Place: Italy
Mother's Birth Place: Italy
Spouse's name: Stella
Home in 1910: Boston Ward 8, Suffolk, Massachusetts
Marital Status: Married
Race: White
Gender: Male
Year of Immigration: 1880
Neighbors: View others on page
Household Members: Name Age
Simon Sottile 49
[47]
Stella Sottile 39
Salvatore Sottile 21
Josie Sottile 20
Jennie Sottile 17
Rose Sottile 15
Paul Sottile 13

OMG. You found people I have not thought about in years! All the Sotille aunts and uncle. The question I am really trying to answer is where in Italy the Tavano's came from. I believe the Sotille's came from Scicily.

Ancestry . com has many records for Giuseppe Tavano, at least two of which have an estimated birth year of 1890. The June 11, 1909 record below is lined out, meaning the person did not actually sail on this ship. Nevertheless, there is information to be gleaned. Does either of these look like your ancestor?

You'll probably find that Giuseppe and his brother Nicola were from Picerno
(Picerno, Potenza, Basilicata)
Here's a possible 1905 manifest for a Giuseppe Tavano born abt 1889 from Picerno, headed to Boston to join his brother Nicola

Also, I double-checked the FamilySearch Pilot site:

Joseph & Rose's marriage record is there (it's on two pages of the town record book)
