Name Variations
Hello, i have Italian Ancestors who came to England, and on alot of their records it shows what i beleive to be their attempted way of spelling of their Italian names:
'Johannis and Germane', i beleive to be Giovanni
Can anyone correct me on this?

Re: Name Variations
I don't know about Germaine, but Johannes is a variant of John, and John is the Anglicized Giovanni.jamiecapaldi wrote:Hello, i have Italian Ancestors who came to England, and on alot of their records it shows what i beleive to be their attempted way of spelling of their Italian names:

Re: Name Variations
Germaine is the feminine form of the name Germain, which is derived from the Latin word germanus which means brother. There was a French shepherdess who was canonized a saint called Saint Germaine.

I find it interesting that both Johannes and Germaine are latinized forms rather than anglicized as you might expect for persons settling in Englnad.

Re: Name Variations
Antonio was born in 1886, so we can assume that his father Joannis was born around 1866 at the earliest and possibly two or three decades earlier (unless you have additional information).jamiecapaldi wrote: Time was around 1890-1905ish!
Interestingly, Joannis, when spelled that way, appears to be the Greek version of John.
Why Greek? Possibly this ancestor was not born in Italy, but rather in Greece of Italian parents?

Re: Name Variations
Joannis is the Latin version for Giovanni. Church birth records used Latin names rather than Italian and some times the Latin name was even abbreviated...

My impression is that "Johannes" is the latin spelling. However, the document which Jamie linked to ( http://img810.imageshack.us/img810/8233/img003m.jpg ) clearly says "Joannis" which I believe is Greek.

Re: Name Variations
Thank you all, very interesting.
It is very odd, why he chose to spell his name 'Joannis' on his son's Birth certificate in 1886 and 'Giovanni' on his Marriage certificate in 1886!

Re: Name Variations
I am sure the likelyhood is small, but one can consider the possibility that the records are not all for the same person...
Giovanni Capaldo in 1884; Joannis Capaldi in 1886? Hmmm...

Re: Name Variations
Also "Pasqua Rosa" was spelled in the birth act as "Pascha Rosa"
Capaldi became Capaldo and Salari became Salera...

Re: Name Variations
Joannis Capaldi (aka Giovanni Capaldo) and Pascha Rosa Salari (aka Pasqua Rosa Salera) married in 1884 and had a child, Antonio, born in 1886. It makes sense...johnnyonthespot wrote:I am sure the likelyhood is small, but one can consider the possibility that the records are not all for the same person...
