1910 Census
1910 Census
Okay... I'm a little confused (What's new Nicholas)...
Is it possible the Census information is wrong in certain years... Will someone with better eyes tell me what you think this Census says...
Line #76 - Nicholas Caprio
http://img688.imageshack.us/img688/7683 ... census.jpg
What I see is:
"Year of Immigration to the US" 1897 /
"Whether Naturalizes or Alien" AL
Thoughts?

Re: 1910 Census
I'm not reading the date any better, but what do you believe is incorrect? He would most likely be an alien in 1910.
Are you aware of an earlier naturalization process?
Also, the census is only as good as the person who provided the info to the census taker. It is not scrutinized for accuracy.

More often than not census information is incorrectncaprio wrote:Is it possible the Census information is wrong in certain years...
It depended upon the memory or direct knowledge of the person giving the information
Sometimes language was a barrier, understanding the question and making themselves understood
The enumerator could question anyone in the house or even a neighbor

Re: 1910 Census
I have to say - I don't know how I would do this without y'all and hopefully ONE DAY I will be one of the people dispensing knowledge. I am an A Type personality who isn't the best in the realm of patience. MY grandmother used to say... Nicky... Pazienza!!! But alas I digress.
I'm entirely confident that he was an Alien in 1910... I believe he was naturalized at SOME point... and I'm doing that research now...
It's amazing because I have so much info... and yet missing KEY pieces at the same time... like WHERE in Italy he was born...
At the same time I can tell you his birthday and show you his WWII draft registration card!

Re: 1910 Census
See what I mean about being lost...
I've searched through Archives dot com... Ancestory... Footnote.... Geaneology somethingorother dot com And couldn't come up with that!!
If he got a SS#. Does that mean he was naturalized?
N
Ps. I don't have the full number so if you could send me a private message that would be great.

Re: 1910 Census
No, you could have a SS# without being a naturalizated citizen.
Of course, that doesn't mean he wasn't naturalized. You just weren't required to be.
I'll send the last four digits in a PM right now.

Re: 1910 Census
Thanks Again T.
I think he was naturalized but it is equaly as possible that he begam the process and did not complete it - which is what happened with my Aunt Rosemary's Dad - who was a successful doctor for his whole life. (she successfully became a citizen last year) no one knows for sure.

Re: 1910 Census
Glad to help
T.
PS - Many didn't complete the process, for various reasons... Just makes our search more interesting/frustrating/rewarding/EXHAUSTING

Re: 1910 Census
There is a possibility that your Nicholas Caprio appears on TWO censuses.
This 1910 Census from Connecticut for Ralph Caprio and family lists a married son Nicholas, age 23 (close enough), married for 4 years, immigrating in 1896.
On your posted 1910 Census Nicholas was married 4 years, and wife and kids (except the 3 month old) were born in Connecticut.
Take a look...

Re: 1910 Census
That could be. Interesting that he is listed as naturalized in THID census and Alien in the other.
Now, not that I would ever want to disparage my ancestor... But is possible he... Um... Fibbed to the census takers. I know he wasn't naturalized until much later. (if at all).

Re: 1910 Census
Okay. What's even stranger is that the CT Census and the NJ Census were done one the SAME DAY!
Re: 1910 Census
Okay. One last question. Has anyone been able to use their Powers to devine a ship manifest for my Nicholas?
