Researching information on Michelantonio Caterini born 1890 LaGuardia. Believe father's name is Salvatore.

Any advice on how to proceed would be appreciated. Grazie.

Welcome to the Forum!

You didn't say where you are in your research.
Normally folks collect all of their US records before starting their research into Italian records. The reason being that they want to be sure the records they find belong to the correct family. Families that follow traditional naming patterns for their children have quite a few cousins in the same comune with the same names.

Do you need help with finding US records, or help with how to conduct your search in Italy (or both)

Thank you, Valarie

Valerie,

Thank you for your response, I should have provided more info.

Searched Ellis island and found ship manifest SS Florida arriving US 1906 with Michelantonio Caterini and what appears to be his father Salvatore. The story i had was that he came alone at the age of 15 but it appears he may have come with his father at the age of 16.

Reading the manifest it looks like they came together final dest. Scranton, PA and his father lists his occupation as shoemaker which would fit.

His name was changed I believe at Ellis Island but I have not uncovered that info as yet. Brothers should be Gaetano, Dominick, and Emil.

Have just started my genealogy research in the last week so have not progressed too far as yet.

It appears that there is limited free search and I am not prepared to pay as yet.

Thank you for any suggestions.

Thank you for the update!
If you have the correct manifest, it looks like they are from Guardia Lombardi, a comune in the province of Avellino, Campania region.

For conducting your own research, here are two great free sites that should help get you started

FamilySearch Pilot
http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsea ... html#start

FamilySearch Beta
http://fsbeta.familysearch.org/#form=advanced-records

If you need a free genealogy program to keep track of your records, many folks use this one (PAF on rt side of the page)
http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

Please ask if you want us to post records from subscription sites.
We're all here if you get stuck

Good hunting!

I don't know if you want to do the research yourself, but I found possible manifests for Gaetano, his wife, and Emilio. If you want me to post it I will.

Misbris,

Yes please do post whatever you have found and I will try to put together. It seems as though Michelantonio returned to Italy a few times and brought over his brothers Gaetano, Dominick, and Emil. He had a sister Catherine but failed to convince her to come to the US.

Do not know the name of his mother as yet.

Having a hard time coming up with records of marrage, death, etc. for Michelantonio who became Michael A. Caterino or Catarino once in the US. Cannot find Naturalization records or name change info either so far.

Grazie,

TC.

Misbris & VJ,

Thank you both so much. The ship manifests are very interesting as it shows Gaetano and his wife (new info) and brother Emil. They are visiting Michele their brother and they are shoemakers which is a fit.

The naturalization record is fab.

Thanx again to you both, your efforts are very appreciated.

Grazie,
TC.

Tessa78,

Grazie, that is the family. No real regard for spelling it seems. And you are right, misspelling of Salvatore as well as surname and Michele died in 1928 of a ruptured appendix which as far as I know Italian doctors told him to address when he returned to the US in 1927/1928 after his last voyage.

Thank you very much.

Grazie,
TC.
